E32 Power Steering Problem

We have a new member of our driving family, a Hartge '88 735i. Lowered, and a hoot to drive. Usually. It is developing a problem, where the power boost does not work in one direction when you first start the car from cold. If you crank the wheel a number of times it clears up, but it is pretty unnerving until it fades in. It is definitely related to the cold - it was fine during the summer, and is fine after a few minutes of running.

Any thoughts, short of $652.13 for a new steering box? I have drained and replaced the p/s fluid prior to the problem, but the level is good, and it did not dirty itself up after the change.
