525i Rearing an ugly head...
Ok heres the deal. I came out of the local Wal-Mart recently to find that my power door locks wouldn't work with the remote. The lights flashed, and the car beeped when I depressed the remote, but the lock did nothing. Well I eventually got into the car and started it up. Unfortunately the power windows, power doors, factory radio, cpu w/temp, mpg, etc., and the display on the cluster did nothing. After driving for about 5 miles the displays lit up and everything worked correctly except that the radio had the word "CODE" on it, and the radio didn't work. Well after 5 more minutes of driving it shut back down and the above mentioned things didn't work. Right now the car is sitting manually locked and I don't have a clue what is the problem. I'm going to check all the fuses, relays tomorrow. If any of you can help me with this that would be incredible! Plus seeing as how I'm a very broke college kid, taking it somewhere isn't exactly a feasible thing to do (I know a broke college kid w/ an old BMW right?! At least it gets the girl when I need it to!) Thanks in advance for your time and help, James

First off...
YOU CAN COUNT ON ME WAITING FOR YOU IN THE PARKING LOT!!!!! I had the same problems with my own central locking system. It would lock and unlock intermittently. I eventually determined it to be one of two things, of which I have yet to get around to fixing. I just disconnected the control unit, til I get around to fixing it. It has to be either the control unit itself gone bad, or the microswitch on the door lock cylinder acting up. There is also the possibility that it could be as simple as a loose or frayed wire shorting on something. Have you recently locked and unlocked the door in rapid succession? This can screw up the central locking sometimes. This may also be related to your alarm control unit. is it a factory BMW alarm? Also what year is your car? |

Hey thanks for the quick reply. It's an '89 with an aftermarket Viper alarm. The weird thing is I went to my car today and it worked fine. Drove it for about 3 miles, turned it off for about 5 minutes and came back out and it was acting up again!! Any help would be great. Also the windows, power seats, sunroof, and dome lights work on and off, all at the same time. Maybe its a relay?....

I would try to get a hold of the power diargams and see what the common link is, power wise, to windows, seats and sunroof. Probably a relay, maybe they did a hack job putting the alarm in?

Hey I've pretty much located the area of my problem. Apparently in the 525i's there is a fuse box under the rear seat. Well EVERYTHING that has fuses in that box isn't working. So I don't know if something got unplugged, broke or what but I'm trying to figure it out now. If you know a common link, or a relay that goes here that would be great to know. Thanks again, James
