Weird coolant leak on '88 M30, any help much appreciated.

I have an '88 735il with the M30 6 cylinder. The car has 147k on it and I recently replaced all the belts and hoses. I bled out all the air and everything was going perfectly until a week later the water level started to come down. The next day lots of water was coming out of the area of the rear of the head. I tried to see exactly but there is little room. I'm hoping that the water isn't coming from the head gasket. I also felt a metal plate on the back of the head. Has any one had a similar problem and what was the fix on it? Thanks, Russell

Best thing is to obtain a small dental style mirror with a flexible head to get behind there and see exactly where it's leaking. They can be obtained from auto parts store.

You're right, it seams like the only real positive way to figure it out. I was just hoping someone was unfortunate enough to have had the same problem. Thanks for the response.

Could be one of the heater hoses in the back.... or a bad heater core....

The problem ended up being a blown head gasket. I haven't seen one fail like this one did but a little hole developed and thats were the leak was at. If I get the head surfaced must I get the thicker head gasket?

I would have the machine shop check it first for warpage. No problem taking .008-010" off, just a clean-up if needed.
