Valve Adjustment on a 635???
Hello folks, first I like thank all whom has given me great advice so far. I usually do my own oil change and valve adjustment on my 1989 911 targa carrera with no problem, but with this recently purchased shark, I wonder if I should attempt to do so? What are the pros and cons? and of-course the procedure or steps to follow in doing so? Thanks again, Bob.

This is a pretty easy job to do. For the beginner, it may take a little longer. You want to err on the side of the the valves being too loose. A good rule of thumb is to measure the clearance before you start adjusting. this will give you an idea of how far out they are, and what the "drag" on the feeler gauge feels like. I like to use the captive method of adjusting.
This article covers the adjustment of the valves on a 325is, however the procedure is identical. http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/E30-Valve_Adjust/E30-Valve_Adjust.htm For an M30, IIRC, you need to remove the airbox/MAF sensor, air boot to the throttle, disconnect the crank sensors, remove a few brackets, then take off the valve cover. On thing you might consider is painting the valve cover when it's off. Gives it kind of a cleaner look. You can even sand down the fins to give a contrasting color. |

one of the easiest cars in the world to adjust valves on. Only takes a few minutes to get the valve cover (and stuff covering it) off, and once you do, the valve train is sitting right there, very easy to see/reach.
