840i transmission issue

Any ideas - car starts and runs fine. But, when pulling away, it's as if the clutch were slipping in a manual car - the revs rise but the car is very slow pulling away. Finally when it gets to cruising speed, the car is fine. It went into limp home mode after the gearbox started playing up.

Where do I start to look?

check the trans fluid level, that is the first step, at the correct temperature and shifting thru the gears. Here is the procedure
