5 series wagon or E320?

I need a station wagon and am looking toward a late 90's, early 00's European "estate". I am considering a BMW or a Benz. I'd really like to get some feedback on the two makers as the only German cars I've owned have been Porsches. Any input would be great!

Thanks.

Jeff, having owned BMW's and Mercedes in the past I'd say that coming from
a Porsche background, you would be happier in the BMW. It's hard to say why but there is something about BMW's that will make you feel more at home. Mercedes, for all of their recent AMG work, still have a target sales group that is somewhat
more inclined to go for comfort that performance. BMW offers sport options
in almost every vehicle they own. The estate models are no exception and tend
to handle quite well. I think in general you'd be happier with a BMW.
I wish there were more estate models to choose from in the U.S., they've just never been that popular here...

Bruce, thank you for the input. I am happy to say the 5 series wagon won. I picked up a beautiful Jet Black over tan 540 iAT yesterday. 2001 with 80,000 miles and impeccable service history. The car is gorgeous and drives about better than anything I've ever been in. The car accelerates, corners and is sooo silent going down the road. I am a very happy new BMW owner! One additional perk, the PO is now looking for a 911 - so he'll be joining all of our fun here at Pelican very soon.

Jeff, that would have been my choice as well. Used to own a 540i sedan, great car.
Congratulations!
