BMW clutch slave cylinder

Yesterday I was finally able to remove the clutch slave cylinder from my 520i so that I could re-build it. When I pulled it out of its 'hole' beside the tranny I had a cylinder with a shaft sticking out of it. I took it apart and INSIDE the cylinder there was a 2-2½ inch long rubber dust boot attached to the shaft that runs out of the cylinder. I have the rebuild kit and it has a replacement boot too. Shouldn't that accordian-type boot be drawn over the shaft on the OUTSIDE off the cylinder?
