BMW Motorrad BoxerCup 2003 Daytona
Dateline: Daytona, March, 5th, 2003 Weather conditions have teams scrambling to set-up BoxerCup bikes for wet running. This track does not favor the soft Metzler Rennsport rain tire due to uneven loading forces in the banked turns, in fact it will tear them up, should they be necessary. THU Mostly Cloudy Low 64°F High 83°F FRI Scattered Thunderstorms Low 63°F High 78°F SAT Thunderstorms Low 57°F High 78°F SUN Scattered Showers Low 54°F High 74°F Other than the proven contenders, look for some consistant rider to emerge the winner on this fast track. Rain might bring out a new skilled rider to steal the race. The one to watch is #46 Brian Parrott. He hails from California, where his family has a Honda dealership. He is a very bright and up-coming racer. He placed 6th in the BoxerCup Series last year and is smooth, consistant and has had extensive experience at Daytona late last year testing various set-ups for BMW Motorrad. He turned some very impressive times. He helped spec out the protocol for the BoxerCup bikes for the Daytona race. It was determined through his testing to go to a higher rear drive ratio as the BoxerCup "S" gearing was too low and the BC bike was topping out to early (RPM/TOP SPEED), additionally, other tricks were found to work well on this high speed track. We will see how well he does in traffic at high speed. We wish him success and a high degree of luck! It is believed that his BoxerCup bike #40 is the best prepared of the USA entrants. This will be an exciting race due to the speed factor. Track condition/wind/bike preparation/skill will rule. This is a short race>>>>DO NOT BLINK! Hey guys,
A great day at Daytona today! The weather finally cleared for some racing action. Watching the BoxerCup practice was fantastic! Sure is good to see BMW racing again at Daytona. The BoxerCup bikes sound like a squadron of aircraft shooting down the backstretch! Awesome! Here's today's results: 3/5/2003 Barth, Parriott, Perez Fastest In First BMW Boxer Cup Practice At Daytona Copyright 2003, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc. BMW Group Niderlassungen Racing Team's Markus Barth set the fastest time in the first BMW Boxer Cup practice session Wednesday afternoon at Daytona International Speedway at 2:07.503 for an average lap speed of 100.515 mph. "For me everything is new," Barth told reporters. "I've never raced on oval, so I'm very surprised that I have fast time. The tactic for the race is very important here, and also the slipstream. I used the slipstream from some other guys, so I feel that's the best solution for the race." Americans Brian Parriott, who will contest the entire nine-round BMW Boxer Cup series, and 18-year-old Jason Perez were second and third-fastest respectively. Wednesday Afternoon BMW Boxer Cup Practice Times (all on BMW R1100 S): 1. Markus Barth, Germany, 2:07.503 2. Brian Parriott, USA, 2:07.527 3. Jason Perez, USA, 2:07.586 4. Thanks for the report.
Markus Barth ran in the top 15 every once in a while during a full year in World Superbike in 2000. Tripp Noble knows his way around Daytona pretty well. Go Springer! I don't think the AMA will run any races in the rain at Daytona.

Another great day of racing!
We came in on the back side of the crash between Valera and Perez. Perez's crew had his bike at the NASCAR 3-4 bathrooms hosing off some dirt and grass. Turned out, the frame was cracked on his bike. He jumped on a backup bike for the first round of qualifying. 3/6/2003 Tripp Nobles Fastest In BMW Boxer Cup Practice Copyright 2003, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc. Veteran racer Tripp Nobles set the fastest lap time in BMW Boxer Cup practice on his O/Brien/Rough Stock Racing/Foothills BMW. BMW Boxer Cup practice has seen extremely aggressive riding by many of the International racers, and the session was stopped for a multi-bike crash in turn one during the Thursday morning session. Javier Valera was able to ride his BMW away from the incident. American teenager Jason Perez crashed in a separate incident in the chicane. Perez's BMW suffered heavy damage, but Perez was relatively uninjured in the fall. Thursday Morning BMW Boxer Cup Practice Times (all on BMW R1100S): 1. Tripp Nobles, 2:06.092 2. "All weekend I've been trying to learn the track since I've never been here before," 19-year-old Richard Cooper told reporters. "I was kind of running at the back really trying to get clear track time. Watching the other classes I see that you need to have to be with a bunch of riders to get a good time. I thought I'd go out and try to get in with the bunches and get into the slipstream and see how much it makes a difference, and it sure did. I was really surprised that I was over a second quicker than anybody out there and it gives you real good confidence for the weekend to come." Cooper raced in the British CB500 Cup, the Honda Hornet Cup, finished second in the 2001 British Supersport Championship and finished sixth in the 2002 BMW Boxer Cup Championship. Yes, Thanks Bill.
I'm pretty damn impressed that a guy that young and completely new to the course can be over a full second ahead of the nearest competitor. And in a field where you can't 'blame' it on the bike. Wow. Very impressive. Do all the bikes run stock wheels? Anyone know just what _can_ be changed? thanks roger

Yes, the bikes run stock wheels. I know they have the Laser exhaust w/ the BMW matching chip. Of course, the mirrors, turn signals, headlight, etc., are gone. Metzeler supplies them with sticky DOT tires. Other than that, I believe that's it. The track commentator said they put out 115hp. Of course, we all know that isn't the case. I'll try to get some more info on the bikes.
One other thing: I'm didn't get a good look at the engine. I wonder if they are running a dual-plug head? We've seen several Boxers (S included) with the new head at the BMW display area.

Yeah this is way cool! Me and Joe are trying to rile up the Buellers by telling them that Tripp Nobles was faster on a Beemer than on his beloved Buell at Daytona. Yes gentlemen...add that to Beemer bragging rights... the Ss are turning in qualifying times equal or better than Buell Lightning Series bikes from last October.

That's cool, I hadn't thought to even compare them. Any numbers or a link to them?

We both know from experience, though the Buell has numerically higher Torque/HP numbers, the powerband falls way off in the upper RPM range, just where racer's are likely to be riding, and where the S-bike has the advantage. |

HP is HP the more the better at Daytona where your full throttle about 2/3 of the time. You set your gearing accordingly Here's the link to the Ball busting of the Buller's(time Comparison) ![]() http://www.sacborg.com/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=005519
