Plugged tire safe?

Is a plugged tire safe, or do I need to replace as soon as possible? I had a screw in my front tire - a brand new Michelin Road 5 - and would rather not buy another.

I’ve searched this but see varying opinions. Has anyone ridden one for an extended amount of time? The hole patched well, and isn’t in an awkward spot.

Safe enough for me when I know it's plugged correctly and I am operating my bike.
I don't know how well you did your plugging nor how you ride your vehicle.
It's always at your own risk.

My personal opinion is for few hundred dollars I’d replace the tire. The only reason you’d plug it on a car is because you have 3 other tires for load distribution plus there’s a spare (usually) if the plug leaks ;-)

I'd ride with a plug in a rear tire. I'd swap out the front at my first opportunity. It's a bummer, those things are $$$.

I plug my tires as required, so far no issues with any of them. Most extreme was on my GS during a trip and had three plugs in one hole but did make the rest of the trip with, again, no issues.

Like Jim I just let the rears go, fronts I'd rather change.

I haven't heard of plugs blowing out, leaking maybe.

Used patch/plug at least 8 times... never a problem.

I have no issues with riding with a plug, but I do closely monitor the air pressure. If I had a plug with a leak, I would replace the tire.

Absolutely unsafe, you'll die under an 18 wheeler & be run over by 100 cars behind it.

Do I do it? Fuk yes, tires are expensive & I'm a cheap azz baztard. In reality I got about a 10% failure rate with just plugs, 0% with plug patches. Sometimes you just have no option but a plug to get home. Working on a couple thou in the rear on my zx, I do try to keep it under 200 though.

So I think I’ll just bite the bullet on this one. Thanks fellas.

When things go wrong the money you are talking for a new tyre is peanuts.

Patch to get home, replace ASAP.

Not mine, but who remembers this one?

Fixed it for you.

Ha, I thought it was a 1200S pannier that was extra deep because of all the space between seat and tire.

Mitch1100 06-04-2020 02:44 PM

I've been riding with a plugged rear tyre for about 5,000kms, but would not risk front. They were new tyres,...Murphy's Law!

sgoodwin 06-04-2020 02:51 PM

Same reason I'm running a plugged rear on the zx. It had less than 100 miles when I picked up a screw. Had a bud with a 929 with 5 plugs in his rear tire. He wore it out with no problems.
