Screech on turn over thread - R12S 80K miles 2006

Hi,

Due to the pandemic restrictions and a garage and drive way build I've not been on any bike for about a year. (bikes on trickle charge)

So with things perhaps freeing up (inoculated now, garage sound) I thought I get the R12S going.

So it screeches when I try and start the bike, occasionally I might get a tiny couch of combustion, but definitely not starting.

So I takes the starter motor off, and I check that it runs OK, then with the help of a mate we take it apart and clean the motor and grease the planetary gears and generally getting it in a better state than it was.

Back on the bike – still screeching really loud and not catching.

So I pull the top plugs, get the rear wheel in the air, put the bike in sixth and….nothing – can’t rotate the rear at all.

So I get the front crank cover off and then realise that the civilian tools I have only go to 32mm and I need a 34mm socket.

So in sixth I push it out of the garage and with the ignition off and the plugs out I set off down the hill and drop the clutch.

Massive squeal.

I keep repeating this and I can see the crank nut rotating and I mark the belt in pencil to make sure it is rotating too - it is.

I'm doing this all on my own so it is tricky (still not allowed anyone on the premises yet)

I’m going to take the starter motor back off and try this bump start trick again, but I think it is coming from the front of the motor.

Any thoughts or experiences?

Cheers

Adrian
PS Hope yer all well.

I had this happen in a car. Alternator pulley bearing seized. The screeching might be the belt.

Yip still screaching with starter motor off.

Alternator sized?

Is that a thing?

Need to find a 34mm socket and not be tempted by my imperials friends offer of one that is 'quite close'.

"Alternator pulley bearing seized" - yes next step is to get the belt off and have a feel.

Does whacking it with a hammer work?

Bugger - does the front of the bike have to come off he says looking for the workshop icon...

LOL..... Maybe. Might break it too. Probably want to try a gentler approach rather than skipping ahead to full wack.

Yes, I'll expose it and see what is up with a mind to packing it with ACF-50 if I think it might help with my procrastination.

Is it a sealed unit or can you change the pully bearing?

Don't know if it is sealed unit but no parts are sold for it. Parts fiche says over 1000 USA for a new one. If you look in parts for sale on this forum. "Bikemiker" has one for sale for a vey reasonable price. part # 12 312 306 280.

There might still be a few local shops that re-build or re-wire alternators and starters.

Side note. This is the 4th time I've tried replying - I hope it takes this time.

Pull the alternator belt and see if the engine still turns over. With the belt off you can try turning the alternator. If alternator is bad take it to an auto electric shop and see if they can rebuild it.
If engine still won't turn over, spray some penetrating oil in the cylinders and let that sit for a couple of days, then try turning motor.

I roll my bikes over every month when in storage. Tranny in high gear, roll rear wheel or use kick starter.

Cheers

Hello everyone,

The internals of the alternator have changed shape to such an extent it has cracked the housing.

It is beyond repair, I seen a second hand one for about £255 GBP.

I've got the bike stripped down and the next step is to remove the suspension strut.

Any tips on that top bolt removal?

I am thinking about using a C-clamp to hold it in place while I loosen it up.

I'll try utube first - Ahhh use an allen key in the top - thats what "Remove nut (1) at top, while counter-holding at the spring-strut stud." means.

Had no idea what a "spring-strut stud." was.

Cheers

Adrian

Hi,

Yes I have been found to rider in the snow, more often its the 0-5 degress centigrade commutes that expose it.

Not commuted for a long time now, most of the damage would have been done in its first ten years of life.

Breakers here in the UK are quoting me about £200, but so far I have only found one.

Every where else is more like £50.

I'll PM yo uand we can see how much they want to ship it.

Hi,

I have a motorworks account - they were my first port of call - but they have none.

They have a place holder page for £255 with no VAT.

They stopped breaking bikes about a year ago, so that they could free up space in their warehouse.

I get the impression that they are storing a vast array of crap that no one wants, so they are thining the shelves so to speak.

The Canadians have suggested $45 USD for shipping to the UK.

BikerMiker - your call - I can buy from you or the Canadians.

I do need to sort this out sooner rather than later, I've an R11S in boxes that needs screwing back togethor, I need to get on with that.

Cheers

Adrian
