Syrange clack sound on decelleration on new boxercup

I only have 300 miles on the bike so far.

I began to notice that when I accellerate I hear a ticking noise that sounds like vavle lash. Its not exceesive but there.

Sometimes when riding close to home with a max rpm of 5K with most cruise at 3K I will let the bike slow down for a stop sign of stop light without using the clutch. Around 3K and down to 2K I hear a loud clacking sound which goes away as soon as I pull in the clutch.

It doesn't do this all the time and is coming from the engine (below the tank). Any thoughts?

Wear some earplugs :D

ErricZ 08-05-2003 10:52 AM

Cold or Warm? You haven't had your first service yet so it could be any number of things that haven't broken it yet ... valve seats, rods, cylinders. If after your 600 mile service, which should really be an 800 mile service anyway, even according to the dealers who tell you to ride it out a little longer :D, you still notice it, then you cold have some other problem. I'd wait until then for a full diagnosis.

mastermind 08-05-2003 12:55 PM

I have about 650 miles on my Replika today... 600mi service is scheduled a week from tomorrow. I'll probably have 800-900 miles on it by then! Oh well....

I too noticed a fair bit of general valve train noise (particularly when the bike was warmed up) that is now slowly settling down and smoothing out. I read somwhere here that the factory fill is a lighter weight oil (to help break in) so that may contribute to a slightly noisier valvetrain as well...

I’m with BMW Motorrad USA. I’m sorry to read about your problem with your BMW. If you would like our assistance, please phone us at ((800) 831-1117, Option 4.

CarlosT 08-06-2003 02:51 PM

Cool! Motorrad is lurking :D :D

repoe3 08-06-2003 04:10 PM

hmmm...i am a bit of a skeptic...do you think they really sent a snooper out to check on us? i have to wonder. while some people hope they monitor these kinda sites, i have my doubts about the validity of their presence. could use information against us.

If its like mine, that sound turned in to PoPs when I change the exahust and removed the cat. After the 600mil service it went away. Kinda liked it. Oh well!

blakebird 08-06-2003 06:06 PM

Has anyone suggested he check the oil level yet?

CarlosT 08-06-2003 07:27 PM

I like the idea. I think that BMW should sit in on this board and really listen about:
- The ****ty seat
- The lack of cruise control
- The ****ty suspension
- The ****ty finish on the fairing fasteners
- The butter soft rims
- The ****ty fuel injection system
- The underpowered motor
- The overweight bike
- The killer throtle pull

...should I go on?

CarlosT 08-06-2003 07:28 PM

BMW please buy back my bike...I'll go away quietly :D

DanceswPavement 08-06-2003 08:15 PM

Carlos: is there anything about the bike youdo like? Just curious.

CarlosT 08-06-2003 08:41 PM

It's cool looking, makes interesting sounds, there aren't many around and it's put together like everything German.

CarlosT 08-06-2003 08:42 PM

I'd still take $15,400 from BMW if they want it back though :D

I'll agree with you on ONE item. The butter soft rims.
Not from personal experience with my bike, just anecdotal stuff and from seeing a couple of friends toast their front wheels on potholes.

Other than that - I think you bought the wrong bike 'los!
Cruise control? Buy an LT...

*****ty seat and suspension and EFI? You must've bought a Ural by mistake :D Mine are fine by me.

Underpowered motor? It has more poop than my V11 Sport - but is way down on my Blackbird and RSV - but you know what? It still has plenty.

Killer throttle pull? Get thee to a gymnasium....might help with the seat complaint too. ;)

Hell....and I'm old too - just turned 48 a few days ago.
How about a nice R1200C? http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat3.gif

It may be only 9 weeks old...but it has 9,500 miles on it.

So I can at least attest to the 2 Spark engine's lack of surging (on mine), and that the seat is fine for a couple of 900 mile days back to back!

The Prep's Showa stuff is not bad....a bit harsh in back, but not bad. When it starts to age, I'll call my friendly neighborhood Bitubo man and make it mo' bettah.

The Throttlemeister is ok for those 15 seconds "gotta get the hands off those tingly bars" moments. Some day the thing is smooth as silk....some days it tingles my hands to sleep on my way to work.

I have electronic cruise control on the family thruxter (GL1800), and seldom use it.

I am starting to hanker for an exhaust for the R1100S though...

Lorenfb 08-06-2003 10:42 PM

My '04 Boxer Cup has about 900 miles and the drivetrain
noise and gear lash are a killer. I had to ride my Yamaha
YZF600R today to give my ears a rest. The numbness in
my hands from the vibs on the Boxer gets to you also.

With all of the above, I can live with it given how well the Boxer
handles in the twisties. It smoked a 999 Ducati near the
Rock Store in the tight ones. I think he stayed back thinking
I would knock a cylinder off based on how far down the
bike would go in the turns, or that may have been his excuse
if I asked.

Do you wear earplugs?

CarlosT 08-07-2003 07:53 AM

900-mile days back to back on the stock seat eh? Your a ss must be made of Kevlar, dude :D Either that or you wear 30 waist Levi's. I get about 200 miles and even with the Alaska Leather buttpad, my manly thighs start to look for a gas stop.

Lorenfb 08-07-2003 10:55 PM

Do I wear ear plugs? Never! Real riders try and be as natural
as possible.

I guess I should, though, but I got spoiled by my Yamaha
YZF600R and the stock muffler.

You should, dude :D

If nothing else the wind noise can give you permanent hearing damage. You damn macho Harley riders :D

30" waist....I wish.
I'm more towards the JAS side of things.....6'-1" and change, 212lbs, 36" waist ....and old. Really old.

...but I do have the strength of ten men. :D

2004 boxercup 08-08-2003 07:01 AM

Wow I didn't expect this thread to go where it did!

I'm glad to see Motorrad looking in. I work for a telecom vendor and I check in on news groups related to my products. It's a great way to find problems early or view trends leading to a possible issue no previoulsy found.

I have checked the oil level and it's fine. This only happens after the bike is warm/hot (Texas heat). If I get a chance I may go by the dealer this weekend or ealry next week. Won't have time to ride the next 4 or 5 days.

Carlos - Geez didn't you go on a test ride? I know the bike has it's quirks, but this is one of the reasons I bought it. As with every bike I've owned in the past, I've always done upgrades and the seat will be the same with this one (maybe if I were 20 years younger I could live with it for long trips).

P.S. The Boxercup gloves from BMW are great and they have a lot more padding in the palm which I found to reduce the vibration. Also for in town riding, I get as close to the seat as possible to reduce the weight on my arms and also finding I grip the handle bars less tightly as I get comforatble with it.

Dave

CarlosT 08-08-2003 07:38 AM

If BMWNA had any balls they'd let you rent the piglet for a month to really figger out what a piece-o-s hit it is. One test ride is not enough IMHO.

No...really...I really do like the bike but you guys remind me of the Buellers in the early stages of denial. I like the bike for its quirks, looks, sound and individuality but let's get f ucking real here. There are a lot of other bikes that offer more performance and value. Take the f ucking blinders off, dudes.

BMWNA please buy my bike :D :D

Could this be somehow necessitated by the horrible bee buzz on the throtle grip of our beloved Ss? :D :D

Man I love getting on a negative groove. You dudes rock for bringing out the worst in me :D :D

DE NILE - NOT A RIVER IN EGYPT

repoe3 08-08-2003 08:03 AM

carlos is full o' *****. and that is all there is too it. the S is obviously not the bike for him. but i would not have bought 3 i did not think it to be a the best all-round bike for my needs. dont have the budget for multiple bikes...albeit carlos thinks i am made of money. if you want more HP get soemthing else, if you want less weight, well then you really dont want a sport touring bike. the weight is nice on long trips. lighter bikes are a bit sketchy sometimes. i like the stability. do i like riding lighter biks? yep, especially if it is just to carve up the backroads, but that is not the only thing i do.

that aside...the oilhead engine can be kinda noisy. but ride a ducati with a vented clutch cover and you talk about noise...i sorta miss the sounds that came from my 916, but hey, i wear earplugs too.

one thing you will realize is that not everyone that speaks as verbose as carlos know what they are talking about...i mean he cant even install an exhaust system by himself ;)

2004 boxercup 08-08-2003 09:13 AM

Carlos has some good points and it's good to see everyone has feedback, good or bad.

Sure beats the hell out of the Corvette jewelry wearing whinners on the corvette forum.

I'm not too worried about the weight of the S. Hell if I was that concerned I'd get off my arse and drop 20lbs myself LOL.

I also looked at the Buell, but until they put the motor from their aluminum looking hotrod in it, I just couldn't do it.

Dave

roger albert 08-08-2003 06:13 PM

That motor will never happen in a buell sportbike. If it had it, it wouldn't turn.
It's a lunk. Fast, but a big big hunk o mass

Lorenfb 08-08-2003 08:28 PM

Just got my Boxer Cup back from the 600/1000 mile service and
the drivetrain noise is basically gone. The drivetrain gear oil is a light
weight stuff for breakin. Once the 90 weight is in there, the noise
level is essentially gone.

Greetings,

90 Weight???

Robert

CarlosT 08-09-2003 09:06 AM

Nice! Yeah the regular BMW synth gear oil is good s hit.

motoyoyo 08-09-2003 09:52 AM

Loren, I was just about to add that point about the light weight break-in oil. A friend of mine recently bought an 03 Prep and complained from the get go that the engine noise was driving him crazy. He actually did a valve adjustment to see if it helped, but evrything was in spec. Once the 600 mile service was performed everything was great.

Carlos, do you wear jeans when you ride? I found that my arse hurts way earlier when I wear jeans instead of leather. I guess it has something to do with the way leather holds you together more like a girdle would. But, I guess you might already wear one of those. Have you ever ridden better on a different bike?

You know, we all have a threshold on our ability that is just really hard to surpass no matter what bike we are on. It comes down to a comfort level on which we go at that speed. I find that the S has a great comfort zone in all but the really tight stuff. And even there it is just a matter of technique that can make it work as good as most anything else. Geez, how fast can you really go on real world street stuff without going down anyway.

Lorenfb 08-09-2003 02:08 PM

Great reply Motoyoyo! Get on him.
