NOT just another tire thread!!!

Been search'in for info on tires to mount soon. Seems like many comments regarding combinations of tires such as a front 010/rear020 in order to wear out both tires at the same time.

Does combining tires in this fashion work with most tires? I'm thinking of the Michelin Pilot Roads, but the idea of a stickier front tire sounds good, so maybe I'll mount a Pilot Sport up front.

Any thoughts on combining tires? thx...

I've had good experience with 020 rear and 010 front.
I've no direct experience with matching different Pilots, but if I considered that combo, I'd keep in mind that Pilot Sports take a little longer to warm up.

It's a good idea in principal. But it never worked for me.

First, I thought my S handled a little more poorly with the 010/020 combo than when I had 020/020's. And I wore out the 010 front before the 020 rear so I ended up having the some issue in reverse.

Second, the S tends to wear the front a little more than most bikes so the issue of having the rear go first is less pronouced. So you're not likely to be throwing away THAT much tread on the front if you replace matched tires at the same time. And the front is cheaper which mitigates the economic hit a bit.

Finally, my experience is that the S's handling really goes downhill rapidly as the front wears - I've never experienced a bike that is so evil-handling with a worn front tire. So I don't mind throwing a 75% worn front in the trash at all - that last 25% of tread carries too big a handling penalty for me.

So I think buying matched rubber and putting up with the small wear differential is the best compromise. But if you can find a combo that works for you and has them wearing out simultaneously with reasonable handling up to the end, go for it. I never could.

you can say that again. with a worn M1 on the front, she is squirrelly and falls into turns abruptly versus the fast but smooth lean into turns with a newer tire.

ummm...doesnt a rear tire have more to do with a highside?

JAS, agreed... everyone has a different opinion, but most people don't think mixing and matching is such a wise thing to do.

Brand new tires are such a pleasure! The first 10%, then it starts going downhill.

I see my sport bike friends run different brands all the time. M1 front/208 rear, 208 front/Battleax rear. you name it. They all ride pretty hard too. Im all for running the same brand and type. That is the best option but I have to say Im running a 208 front and a PRoad rear right now. Sorry

Azaro ST's rock the Casbah. Gravel deflection capability galore.

Okay, so here's a question. I've been enjoying Sportec M1s but finance and situation (lots of loaded super slab, city riding, too few twisties, etc) have me wanting to get into something with more mileage. But I'm all out of sync because I recently put on a new front M1. I thought I'd go to a mez4(highside special) rear, and use up the rest of the front M1 but now I'd like to try Pilot Roads. Can I put one on the back until the front is gone without too much trouble?

I just finished with a M1 front/Road Rear. Had it at the Gap this summer and like the combo a lot. Got 7759 out of the M1 front. The only reason I change was because I am taking a 4K trip and didnt want to mess with tire change. It was about gone anyway. As far as the combo.......I couldnt get anything to step out or get squirrly.

Intereting about your combo. What did you go to? And 7759? Really?

buke.....208 front/PRoad rear now. Will see how this works. I usually get high mileage out or tires. I live in Kansas so nothing around here, like mountains, to ware out the tires quickly. I got 12,000 on a set of Macadam X100s on the 929 right now.

remember when ben bostrom had a bad crash at the tire test. he tore his hand up during that incident. i agree that daytona is not the choice venue for bikes, but it does draw a crowd.
