ABS Fault
Greetings,
I'm getting the alternating flashing ABS lights on my 2000 S and they won't clear. I checked the manual recommendations regarding low battery voltage (about 13.5V even though it's three years old) and proper delay before starting. Searcing the previous posts also a suggested burnt out brake lamp (OK), broken wires (those I can see look OK), and loose battery connections (fine). Disconnecting the battery doesn't reset the fault, either. Any other suggestions before calling the dealer? BTW, I have an extended warranty but I'm guessing the dealer would charge if all he did was reset the computer. |

I'd think it would be covered. You paid for the warranty - I'd use it.

Try replacing the tail light bulb anyway (even if you think it's ok). Mine did the same thing, and it appeared that I had either a connection issue in the socket or an intermittent bulb. At any rate, after replacing the bulb (which appeared to be working fine), all was well.

Twinfan, Battery voltage with "key on" is critical. 13.5v seems high unless the key is off. Chances are you have a hard ABS fault which could be cleared by your dealer and your battery may need to be replaced as well. Your warranty should cover it, except for the battery. Modog has a newer ABS system (EVO) on his bike which has a bulb monitor circuit. So it's doubtfull your brake light bulb has anything to do with it.

Thanks, I'll check it with the ignition on. I've also got a cheapo hydrometer which might tell me if the battery is failing.

Twinfan,
If you're getting the alternate flashing lights, then you need to go to a dealer. Even if you rectify the problem, whatever that may be, the ABS error code will not reset itself until you've been plugged into a dealer diagnosis computer. It's literally a 30 second job, and the dealer would have to be pretty mean spirited to charge you for it. He could also confirm what triggered the error in the first place, to give you some peace of mind. Cheers, Paul |

Done. Dealer says a new ABS module is needed. I'm feeling pretty good about buying the extended warranty now. Thanks for the advice.
