I heard some info on this awhile ago but haven't held one yet. Allegedly it uses a "heads up" type display to put the rear view on the inside of the visor. I guess it uses a rear looking periscope?
I for one would find it visually confusing. But hey I'm just an S pilot and generally don't worry about whats behind me

An easier solution is used by alot of vintage riders. Alot of the veteran bikes never had ANY mirrors. Putting one on the bike looks dopey. So they just stick a bicycle helmet mirror on their halfshell. Hey, it works.

The question is whether it negatively impacts your concentration levels at times when you really need to focus 100% on whats ahead of you. I guess its possible it would be quicker to get a glimpse behind this way rather than conventional mirrors, but then again you can more readily ignore your conventional mirrors if you choose to. I'd like to hear from someone who's had a go of this system.

Gents,
I tried a prototype on at the recent NEC Motorcycle show in Birmingham, UK, last month. They claim they would be selling the helmets in March 2004 for about £299 (approx US $450). The mirror you see in the visor aperture is really quite small. I'm guessing at about not very much more than 1/4 inch tall by about 2 inches wide. It's right at the top of your field of vision and you need to really consciously move your eyes upwards to see it. This demo was inside a building, not on a bike, but I don't think you'd find it too distracting on the road. The system was origionally developed for bicycle helmets, and those are currently on sale in the UK. Try your local cycle store to see if they have them, so you get an approximate idea of what the Motorcycle system will be like to use. Hope this helps. I'm certainly going to try to test ride a production helmet when they finally hit the shops. Cheers, Paul Last edited by BeemerPaul; 12-02-2003 at 03:10 PM.. |
