interesting article about ram air and its benefits..figure this has to carry over to the S and the induct...not that i am fishing or anything.

Hey Repoe3;

Good info. I am wondering what gains you would get with the In-Duct ?

roger albert 05-07-2004 09:32 AM

I really like SportRider, but the article is pretty much fluff. First, it's no secret that ram-air works, so what's the point. 2nd, there is NO reason to believe that shooting a compressor source in the area maps well to gneralized hi speed airflow. 3rd, there's even less reason to believe that the specific locations the was directed at would correspond to the high and low pressure points generated by actual airflow over the nose of the specific bike.

So, it says: More air = more power.
Big suprise. Again, I like SportRider, and applaud their efforts, but a competent Jr. High science teacher could use this only as an example of bad science, procedure, and assumptions. Cool idea, but utterly useless.

And who knows what the induct gains are. The bikes do better at high speed roll-ons, but the benefit naturally doesn't show up on the dyno, and thus the gains aren't readily quantifiable. We shouldn't confuse a lower restriction and improved intake, with a real ram air system. Again, that's no knock at the product, which I use a like, I'm just pointing out the folly of expectding dyno numbers for it.

You passed up a perfectly good opportunity to breathe some life into the induct thread?

doh...

I'd sure like to see the at-speed airbox pressures for the induct vs. stock...it could be quite a selling point. :)

best,

Dave
stock intake. :)

call PI research and get their data aquisition setup andlets us know. i am actually still running the stock intake as well. had it on the last S and it was a part of the total package to say the least.

Good point DS.

I thought that was once published, at least on a thread.

I expect to install a MAP sensor on the LM1 and measure it myself this summer.

I went ahead and put the chip in yesterday. It was so nice and cool, I figyred if I wasn't riding, I should be working on Rojo Diablo. You are gonna like the ride Tuesday!:D

I'm not gonna put the Rene airkit on till the 900 miles point. I want to ride it like this for awhile to see how much of a seat-o-the-pants difference it makes. So for now, clipped wire, high flow air cleaner, box derestricted, Rene pipes and chip. Man does it feel good. Pulls hard in 2/3 from 7-9 with light front wheel.

As I changed out the stock paper element air filter for the Evoluzione, I was looking at my ram air intake track. From the fairing, the two inlets feed up to openings on the inside of the frame rails. From the airbox( or Airkit when I install it) there is a 2 legged rubber fitting that connects the bottom of the airbox to the two ram air tracks. The legs fit inside and are about 1/4 inch thick rubber.

I was thinking it would be probably benificial to make a carbon fiber track that fit over the ram inlets vice inside, freeing up more space and not slowing down the flow as the air compresses into the small rubber legs enroute to the airbox.

Damn if I were still in Hawaii, my buddy Steve would lay up a form for me. Those guys that build boats know how to form one off pieces fairly easy.....

What'ya think?

Firebolter - The early Mille air boot available from AF1 does exactly what you want to do. I made up a couple gaskets from rubber mat to seal between the frame openings & the boot horns as there is a slight gap there. Works great!

I know from a test done by CBT and Mark Doebeck (ex Dyno Jet) that the RT fitted with the InDuct runs at 4 inches of water at 100 to 110mph. I am not sure, but it may have pegged the gauge.

The conversion puts this at .155 psi inside the airbox. This in itself to quote the owner, 'made a significant performance increase' with the addition of fuel via the Fuel Nanny.

On the dyno however, my development RT made small gains in various areas (as seen on my website) contrary to the on road gains.

As far as the difference to the S is concerned, I am still waiting for the tests to be done in the future.

Part of what makes the InDuct work is not just removing the restriction in the rear section, size of the mouth on, and the shape and cross sectional increase on the front section.
How much difference this makes is hard to substantiate with dyno numbers. It is interesting that some of you guys are still curious about the benefits. :D

bikpaintr, thanks for the tip! I'll check that out.
