How to prevent saddle sore chafing?

I just got back from a short overnight trip - in 100 degree weather. Of course, my friend and I got major saddle sore - the inside of our thighs that make contact with the edges of the saddle chafe from sweating inside our pants. I was wearing special REI boxers that are supposed to wick away moisture and motorcycle pants. My friend was wearing regular boxers with jeans. Does anyone know any tricks of the trade that works to help prevent this type of saddle sore? I even put tiny holes in my pants to act as vents for air circulation - kind of helped but not really. I suppose I could bring a bottle of baby powder, but that gets all over. Thanks!

I have found the "wick away" materials have a tendency to irritate
my skin. Silk boxers or cotton briefs have been more comfortable for me when spending several days in the saddle.
JAS had a thread going the other day that could be helpful as well

IMO, if the seat isn't right "ergonomically" then it's a lost cause.

Sheepskin works great for hot weather - but you can't get around the seat shape issue.

best,

Dave

The way I see it you have a couple of different choices, depending on how much money you want to spend.

$ Bicycle shorts, silk boxers or some undergarment that allows your outerwear not to bind. ( I wear a pair of bike shorts with a synthetic pad. I've ridden 8 straight 500+ mile days without significant discomfort.)

$$ Seat pads, either sheepskin or an air pad like the Airhawk. (I borrowed Airhawk for a couple of hundred miles and it was nice. Not $150 nice. I think the real benefit came from having a different riding position then the previous three hundred miles.)

$$$$ A custom seat from one of the many vendors. (This is at best hit or miss even when you get your butt measured)

Ride the stock saddle in whatever you usually wear, tough it out then complain to your buddies at every stop.

Bike shorts (yep, those sexy spandex ones!) can help, get good ones though, and you may need to try a few brands or models to see what works best. Just like on a bicycle, do not wear underwear underneath. And like your grandmother said, you need to change them and give them a chance to dry out, ideally should have more than 1 pair along on a trip... if it is bad, I'd suggest changing out of them often, and letting the wet pair dry (I'm talking about sweat here guys!)

A mountain bike racer I knew used to liberally dose his bike shorts with talcum/baby powder before putting them on, he said it helped with comfort. I have tried this (on bicycles) and haven't noticed any impact.

The best improvement for me was a Corbin seat.

I use padded cycling shorts under my Rocket overpants for long trips. Once again confirming the dork factor but I don't get monkey butt.
