Need a 02 BCP rear caliper
If anyone has a source to buy a used 02 BCP rear caliper, please let me know. I recked the threads in mine (idiot) by cross threading one of the bolt holes last year. My buddy fixed it for me with a Heli-coil ( spelling?) and it lasted all season. Just removed the wheel to spoon on new tires, got the wheel back on. Installed the caliper bolts (by hand this time - fool me once ) then went to torque them down per spec, and the same Heli-coil spun on me.
That said, I just assume replace the caliper, rather then risking this problem on the road. BMW in there infinate wisdom forces you to buy a whole new caliper as opposed to the hanger only which the caliper is attached too. So if your trying to part out a NON abs 02 or newer BCP, or you know someone who is, please let me know. Thanks in advance, Robert Mariani

Go to www.mcmaster.com, go to page 3063 and 3064 of their online catalog. Or do a product search on p/n 93715A605. This will put you in the "threaded inserts for metals" part of the catalog. These are the next step up from helicoils. We use these (in English sizes) all the time at work. They really hang in there, particularly if you use Loctite red (high strength) on the outer threads when you screw in the insert. A lot less $$ than a new caliper. And McMaster-Carr is right there by Chicago, in Elmhurst. Or check this guy out on eBay:

Had the same exact thing happen this weekend. Called around, $250 for a caliper, can't buy the hanger, tyadda yadda...go wrecked I say, find a bone yard.
Try this e-bay guy... Or do what I did, Helicoil it again. If your hole size is too big you can maybe use some J.B. Weld epoxy and re tap it.

Do the McMaster insert repair before you use JB Weld. That stuff is good, this is better. Or during the winter get someone to heliarc build the metal back up and retap it. But honestly, the metal insert is the best thing we've found where I work. Aluminum just isn't that great a metal for threading and holding those threads. In fact, we have the inner threads go out on the inserts long before they loosen up and work free of the parent aluminum metal. It's the way to go.

Hey Moybin,
WOW, thanks for the quick response .......checked out what you suggested, going to give that a try. Thanks!!!!!! This board is a great source of help......Now who can give a mechanical neophyte a good source to learn how to adjust my valves and sinc the throttle bodies on my BCP. I hate not knowing how to do it almost as much as I hate paying my dealer to do it for me. Thanks again, Robert Mariani

Just search the forum posts for valve adjustment. The whole thing is here. Also, the IBMWR.org site has the procedure, I think it is even a .pdf document. Once you have the valve covers off and are looking at the mechanics of the valve train you will be amazed how simple it is. Also, I have in my possession a set of feeler gages that are quite long, about 4 inches. When I last adjusted my valves, I was able to slip a single feeler gage through both valve gaps and 'tickle' them to the same level of drag (meaning the same gap). Many member complain about needing 2 feeler gages and a couple of more hands to do that job. But I had no problems. Just make sure to do it with a cold engine. And torque the cover bolts back on. It doesn't take much to strip them, as you know from the brakes.
