What is up in Maine this weekend ...

I am leaving from work Friday and heading 100 miles or so over to the Western Maine European Motorcycle Meet, which is celebrating its 5th year this time around. Lots of great roads in and around the White Mountains and Bigelow Range, loads of really cool folks on all manner of iron from the Old Country and a chance to view the personal BMW collection of Mr. Dave Percival. SUPER nice guy who opens his private collection up two days a year for the biking public (once for the Hermit Island Rally in May and this weekend for the Western Maine Meet). Among the more than 70 (!) Beemers Dave owns are two that were featured in the Guggenheim "Art of the Motorcycle" show; including his 1923 R32, the first model produced by the marque. Here is a picture I copped off the MEME site from a few years ago:

The place is just wall-to-wall roundels! He also has a couple of vintage racing sidecar rigs, including an Isle of Man winner! Wicked cool! I will be taking plenty of pictures this year--since I bought a Canon PowerShot A80 digital camera this spring--so expect a full report and plenty of pix.

The "Spirited Ride" is Saturday AM and winds up through the mountains and lakes region. I am heat taping my ego to prepare for the torching it will get from all the Ducati, Aprilia and MV Agusta guys ... but I promise to do my best to ride up to the S's capabilities!

Out 'til Monday, take care all.

PS: Any New England riders looking for a good run should head to the Jordan Grand Hotel at Sunday River in Bethel for the meet. We hold a Bike Show on Sunday and all profits go to the Maine Handicapped Skiing Association.

How far is this from Wells, Maine (mileage and time)?

I live on Long Island I am picking up a /2 tool kit Saturday morning on Staten Island, NY and I'm half tempted to just keep riding!

Bethel is about 100 miles give or take from Portland so tack on another 20 or so from wells.

If you took Route 5 up from Wells to the Bethel area it would be about two hours of backroad fun. The other (likely faster) route would be to stay on 95 to 495 and get off onto 26 in the Gray area and follow that to Bethel. Either way, it would be a good trip for you ... and I will buy you a beverage if you make it!
