Roger, I need your input

Roger,

Can you confirm something for me? RE: the '74 r90\6.

The folks at Hamersley tell me it is impossible to get a part for the final drive. It is the race that sits on top of the pinion gear.

In this diagram, the needle bearing the race goes into is depicted by the #10.

Are you familiar with this race?

Can you confirm or deny this rumor?

Do you have another source for parts?

Do you have one laying around?

roger albert 02-03-2005 09:55 AM

They are tough to find.
You basically need to part an old rear drive.
I"ll have to look around, but I'm in the middle of a big
garage/shed move, so everythings boxed up right now.
May take a week or so before I can find if I have one.
I can confirm they seem to be NLA from dealers.

Rapid Dog 02-03-2005 10:05 AM

Shan, post what your looking for on Boxerworks.com.
All them old geezers got answers and parts.

Thaks Roger. Let me know if you run across one. For such a common piece of equipment, I'm a little suprised that this is such a hard item to find.

roger albert 02-03-2005 11:14 AM

They normally never die, so no ever replaced them, so dealers never ordered them in any qty, so the factory quick making them, so they're NLA. Happens with parts that don't often fail, unfortunately.

shannonnunley 02-03-2005 11:27 AM

It was damaged during the removal process unfortunately. Thanks in advance for looking.

roger albert 02-03-2005 11:37 AM

I figured as much. :)

Wish I could say that had never happened to me.
Alls we can hope for is that not too many of those are too expensive.

Good call.... their service parts guy (Nathan) says he'll have it by tomorrow.

Rapid Dog 02-03-2005 01:26 PM

Roger, boxerworks was able to send me the needle bearing along with the appropriate race.... had a certified airplane mechanic put it all together in about three hours. That little project only ate up 8 weeks, but I can be sure that the drive is solid.

Now on to the switch gear and a bunch of obsolete rubber tidbits.

One day Roger, one day.

EZ-RIDER 02-19-2005 09:17 AM

Hey Shannon;

I will also ask a few people if they have one you may have to buy a complete Final drive.

final drive or the switch gear/assembly? The final drive has all new gears and rubber now, so I'm good there. The rubber on the switch gear/assembly is pretty shot however.

You should be able to get the rubber for the switchgear at Bob's BMW. They're a great source for airhead parts and if they have 'em in stock you'll have 'em in 2 days. Bucky is very helpful in finding the hard to find stuff or coming up with good substitutions where applicable. Download the catalog, it's an excellent source of good info.

hammersley is cheaper and I have a relationship with the guy (Frank) who I deal with. The only time they have ever let me down is getting that stupid race which goes on top of the pinion gear.

Thanks for the tip though.

also try Hucky's < http://hometown.aol.com/bmwhucky/ > he's got a lot of airhead obscuranta; specializes in small parts. Hans is a great, nice ol german guy who has good prices too. i've used him quite a bit with my various airhead projects
cheers,
Lance
