Handlebar Riser
I just returned from San Jose (CA) BMW where they installed ($75) an aftermarket BMW handlebar riser kit ($80). It did NOT require replacing any of the cables (the mechanic did, however, have to cut the ties on the existing cables to gain the necessary slack). The riser kit repositions the handlebars up 2" and back about 1" ... I sure notice the difference.

Hi,
Wow, $75 sounds like a bargain? Do you know the make of the kit? Did you use it with the stock or comfort bars? I'd love to learn more about it, as I think I'm in the market for something similar. thanks regards roger |

The riser kit is an aftermarket BMW part # 238 HBB. It works with the stock bars. I compared it with a friend's R1100S with the "official" BMW riser kit (which costs about five times as much...) and the end position of the bars is essentially the same. You can get more info from SJ BMW (408) 295-0205. Good luck!

Hi Steve,
Just saw the risers you described at my local dealer (they just started carrying them) Interestingly, they don't actually contribute to the rise at all. The rise is from mounting the stock bars above rather than below the triple clamp. The 'risers' merely allow that the bar is bolted into position so it can't rotate, by essentially relocating the pegging hole from below to above the triple. (the factory hi-bars use a small trapezoidal peg that fits in a groove on top of the triple, the factory low bars use a bolt through an extra eye near the pinch clamp, that screws into the bottom of the triple. Hope that helps some others in the future. I Have both bars and confirm Steves assessment that the end result is about the same. The relocating kit is a real bargain compared to the factory option and also provides a bit _more_rise (~10mm) later roger p.s. what's this junior/normal/senior member stuff. just curious. |

Wow, I wish I had known about the after market riser kit before I did the BMW kit. I have my bars where I want them but I could have saved money.
Just a thought, but the junior, senior member stuff is probably related to the number of posts one makes on the board... Christopher |

Suburban Machining of Ohio makes a Handle Bar
riser kit. I believe the cost is $86.00 and it must be ordered through your Dealer. There is a little blurb on the kit in the latest MOA News, October 99, page 37. Happy Trails! Steve Brooke |

Yeah, the Suburban Machinery kit is a very inexpensive alternative to the factory comfort/high bars. It basically allows one to relocate the regular bars above the triple clamp. You could do this anyway, actually. What the kit provides, is a pair of brackets that allow one to still screw the clip-ons onto the triple clamp, so that they can't rotate around, no matter what. You end up
with something just a tiny tick higher than the factory high bar for a lot less cash, albeit somewhat less sanitary. Watch this space for a couple other alternatives I'm developing, for mounting the bars yet higher, for those who so wish. One will work with existing cabling and move you up a couple ticks more than the factory bar, another more yet. Working on cable retrofit requirements now. later roger |
