Airbox input pipe

I recently took a close look at the airbox feeding pipe. I was astounded to see how sharp and how narrow the last bend is. For the fun of it I removed it (both the feeding pipe and the top of the air-filter housing, but not the air-filter retainer). Initial feedback seems to be some significant increase in top end power and in induction noise. There also seems to be a slightly weaker midrange, although this may be only an impression due to the increased top end.

Any one has any experience in this area?
