Talking Deeper tone? (wow, look ma, R11S content!)

Hmmmmmm, so after amassing 4000 miles on the bike since May 5th, all of a sudden the other day the exhaust note at idle got noticeably, albeit slightly, deeper in tone...more of a rumble to it that wasn't there previously.

Anyone out there leave their stock pipes on long enough to experience this anomaly? (laugh people, laugh, but seriously folks....)

Erric Z.

I noticed the same thing. Dont know when it happened, but I remember the S being a lot quieter when new.
I wonder what it is. The cans, the header pipes?

Obviosuly it is everything settling in, I guess it's a combination of everything going through heat expansion/contraction cycles. I just wonder if it will stay that way or get even deeper as she "breaks-in" more? *Shrug* Only miles will tell!

On another note, it also seems to be a little hotter and some jumping in the RPMs...this was all at the same time. I think I'll stop by my service department and make sure the TB's and TPS are in synch.

Yeah I left my stock pipes on for upwards of 8500 miles.... Didn't notice any increase depth of tone except when it wasn't perfectly synched. Then it had more note and more shakes.

Gotta get me a twinmax...

As pipes break in the packing either blows out to a degree or compresses to the piont that it is less effective. that is probably your change. If it is a minor change. Have you modified your airbox. you'd be surprised how much that can change your sound.

for instance San jose bmw makes a billet alumanium air box mod. great mod for top end but some minor loss on quick throttle down low. do to the larger air filter.

or removing it for single filters etc.

BMW pipes are full stainless. Like Staintunes, I don't think that they have any fiberglass packing.

Does the Staintune change color like the BMW?
Does anyone make different headers?

While the headers turn blue then rust near the engine the staintune turns kinda yellowish or a gold tint with use.

I'll take some pictures of my ugly arse Blue/Red/Green/Orange headers for everyone this weekend....Then I'm going to get a mid-pipe back custom exhaust down at Mufflex Performance in Trenton. It'll cost a helluva lot less and sound sweet to boot.

If your pipes are bluing, shine em back up with fine wet-sandpaper. Mine look great, and everyone who see them think they are titanium due to the pretty new golden color. No more blue...

When you say pipes are you refering to the tubing, because if you are not you're sadly mistaken and please don't try to correct me if you're not sure what your talking about the material that the outer case is made out of has nothing to do with its' contents there is packing in there I know this because i was in my pipes doing a bafflectomy discussed in earlier posts.

Read me again. I know Staintunes do not have fiberglass packing. I thought that the BMW cans were similar in that regard. If you cut yours open then I guess you must know for sure. My stock cans are long gone.

Cool

I know that the stock cans got some kinda bypass valve which balances the flow to the left can as the revs go up but I'm looking forward to putting some louder cans which just flow and weigh less. What's the cheapest route here? I already did the Laser cat eliminator and I'm pretty happy with the change.

Carlos,

The next step has to be a chip. I use the bbpower which makes a noticable difference not only to the feel of the engine but in the fuel consumption as well. More ooomph and more mpg, so the chip will pay for itself.

Cans only seem to add noise. The Lasers seem slightly louder than the Vanderlinde and are reasonably well built. Havn't heard a Two Bros so can't comment.
