Hey could I talk everyone into checking the play on their rear wheel. I just got my bike back from the dealer after having the rear pinion seal and a rear bearing replaced. Within a 100 miles I have play back in my rear wheel (if you put your bike on the center stand and grab the tire at 3 0'clock and 9 0'clock)originally my dealer said this was normal but after talking to the bmw rep decided it was not normal thus he replaced the bearing. Anyone know whats up with the play and how to remedy it? Thanks Jeff.

This sounds to me quite normal - there were some previous posts last month.
It's the Pivot bearing between the shaft housing and the rear diff housing. There needs to be a tiny amount of play I think. The bearing is an adjustable roller type, and shud be torqued at the major services. My BM expert reckons they are a common wear item, and shud be last til arnd 40000 miles. Hope this helps JOC |

Jeff,
You can retorque the pivot if have the tools. Remove the locknut with a 30mm socket. Loosen the 12mm allen bolt minimally. Torque this to 7nm of torque (do not know the ft lb equivalent) and put a little locktite on the locknut and torque to 160nm. This should do ok as I had the same problem and consulted the manual. I have not had any problems now for about 3,000kms. Regards, Lennie |

To all who have done this job -
Did you have any trouble loosening the adjuster (12 mm allen)? I removed the lock nut but the adjuster will not budge. Is there loctite on that adjuster? Dave [This message has been edited by DavidSoine (edited 05-22-2001).] |

Sure is Loctite (or the BMW equivalent) on the adjuster. You have to heat it with a heat gun to get it loose and if you want to get any feel for adjustment purposes you have to take it all the way out and clean the Loctite off it. I haven't put any loctite on my adjuster when I have replaced it as I have found that it usually needs occasional adjust, so I have only loctited the locknut! But the manual recommends putting it on the adjuster as well.
Good luck |

Ahh, yes. Thanks.
Tonight I removed and cleaned the adjuster and adjusted the bearing...play is greatly reduced but not eliminated, so I'm going to keep an eye on it for now and re-adjust if necessary. best, Dave |

I adjusted mine as per the manual and ended up replacing them within 3500kms.
Easy job to replace. All the obvious tools plus a hammer and drift. Use the old cone (outer race) to drive home the new bearing if you don't have a drift large enough. Regards, Lennie |

Just an update on this. I had the entire rear end replaced today under warranty (081001) because there was too much play in the rear wheel. The Service Writer said the parts alone came to about $900.00. Now I can say my bike has a tight rear end again.

Well there should be no more than .002"-.003"( 0.0508-0.0762 )play in the wheel.
Also according to my BMW guy, a service bullitin say NO Loctite on the adjuster... jeff watches his rear-end play closely(?) |
