Frame tabs broken!

Went to ride yesterday morning and noticed the gap between the seat and tank was abnormally large. Not good...

Took off the seat and noticed the rearmost tabs on the side panels of the fairing were torn off...

The two upper frame tabs that the rear subframe bolts onto tore off...

The bike's still under warranty, so I dropped it off at the dealership. Not 100% certain this will be warranted, but I don't see why not. The bike's never been crashed or abused. This sucks! Just the faring panels and frame parts are $2,500, not including labor!

well how did it ride with a cracked sub-frame?

I know that some GS had a similar problem with shearing at the tranny mount when off roded that is why they developed the hard parts kit

Any thoughts on how this happened fatigue/ metallurgic failure?

That's shocking, Steve. I wonder how they'll fix that casting with the broken off tab. It should definitely be fixed under warranty, but I sure hope they find some "unusual" defect when they inspect it.

OUCH!!!
Do you store it outside? Could it have been 'nudged' sideways by something? This is bad. Hopefully it's a warranty deal. If not, it's time for a good TIG welder, than strip the subframe and powdercoat. I CAN say that eastwood 'cast aluminum' color powdercoat is virtually identical to the OEM color. Man, I feel for ya; that's not a simple or cheap fix to do it really right. *sigh* what we put up with to own a donkeybike

And usually, breaking the tabs like that involves a hit from the side, not an up-and-down load. IF you DO have to pull it down and fix it, have your welded 'box' the tabs so they have lateral strength as well as vertical strength....bummer, man..

Steve man that sux hard! Sorry for the woes. Please do let us know how it turns out. I've toyed with the idea of strengthening mine with some TIG welds. IIRC someone here did a bolt on replacement for theirs.

I only rode it once with the tabs broken off, on the way to the dealership. Rode fine, but I just took it easy. No idea what could have caused this; the bike's never been down, and I've never seen any damage to indicate it's been hit without my knowledge. It's stored in a garage. I'm sure one tab broke first and the second one followed suit over time. I would assume the warranty fix would be a new main frame. The dealer can't submit for the warranty repair until Tuesday, so I should hear this week.

Fixing the tabs is usually just a matter of TIG welding them back on, but since this is a warranmty issue they will probably replace the main frame.

Steve, even if the warranty is over, there is always such a thing as product-liability, or the ‘reasonable terms’. If you can prove you didn’t abuse your bike, and used it in a normal way, under normal conditions, you may expect a certain lifetime regarding this product. (this is always in relation with its price, and its name and fame)…

…good luck !

It was Freitag when Fritz der Welder returned from his kleine Zeit fur Trinken. Wiping the suds from his moustache, he wondered if he had completed welding the tabs on the frame he was working on. Fritzy thought to himself, "Ja, well, ve vill use un extra coat of paint to hold it all in place. Dat vill verk".

Happy Fritz is now in upper management. He'll be unveiling the new R1200 S tomorrow.

hey!
don't pick on me!
stevie the wonder called me on friday about this, and you can bet your butt i ran out in the garage while we were on the phone to check mine.

it appears as though mine was welded on a wednesday not friday, and by Wilhelm, not Fritz.
whew!

even still, it's on my pre-flight eye-ball list now.

"neva heard of him"......sheesh!
