Adjustable cam sprockets anyone?

Are you ready for this? I need your input and suggestions.

I'm about ready to have some adjustable cam sprockets made using the stock sprockets. My son is making some mechanical drawing for the machinist to work from then I will have the prototype made.

My questions are;

1. Aluminum or steel carrier. I would like to use the best aluminum to save weight.

2. Use 3 or 4 4mm bolts or 5mm bolts? There isn't much room and 5mm would be the max. I think 3 5mm would be fine. 4 mm would give me more room to work with but I feel 4 bolt would be needed.

3. How many of you would be interested in purchasing? Of course if I can get them to work and are priced right. Even if no one is interested I'm probably going ahead with the project.

The actual design was no big deal. It's just that the sprockets are on the small size and that leaves little room to work with.

I'm up for a set; noproblemo if they aren't insane; cam timing is hugely important and there is power to be had from cam timing in spec. good idea, if it pans out. Please do keep me posted.

Phillip,

I have a set that is adjustable from 3 degrees retarded to 12 advance that uses a locating pin and multiple timing marks.

From making my sets, you will need the correct steel, have them gear cut, timing marks etc and then have them hardened.

With my cams there are 8 different processes that they need from cutting the blanks to the hardening.

If you can make an adjustable set using a bolt retaining method I really take my hat off to you.

Good luck with this.

Lennie,

My plan is to use the stock sprockets, just have to bore them out and tap for the set screws/bolts. It will be tight but I think it will work. Time, and money, will tell. I'll keep everyone posted.

That is probably a good place to start as the heat treatment was an important part of mine.
