Anything Else I Should Know???
 

I just bought a 2001 R1100SLA and it's time for its 12,000 mile interval. I read the manual and read "Valve Adjustment for Dummies." It certainly seems like a much simpler operation than the GSX1100G and the VFR800 I already own.

Are there any surprises in there once I pop the lids off the jugs? Or is it all as straight-forward as it seems?

at 12k you should do more than just the valves. check the book. fluids need to go.

welcome new dude, ditto what the boys here said, but I'd allow a nice Sunday afternoon so you can take your time, dropall the fluids,
get your oil filter and crush washers from the dealer
expect to do an airfilter service too.

...no really, I was just going to drain out the oil into a coffee can, rinse out the filter with kerosene, and reuse them both. Hydraulics? Never change them until they look like root beer. Air filter? Nah, breathes better without it.

What all does the 12k involve?

Be careful putting the valve covers back on. Run a finger up the sparkplug hole and make sure you don't have the inner valve cover gasket (donut shaped) crooked.
I try to use mine at least one or two valve adjustments, but the more oil you get on the inner gasket the harder it gets and more likely it is too leak.
Use two feeler gauges per set of valves (one of each intake OR exhaust valves). Try and get the "feel" the same.
After a good valve adjustment, ride the bike about 30 miles and then do a very careful throttle synch.
I suggest Autolite 3923 sparkplugs changed every spring along with all the fluids and filters in your bike.

Basically like was said, set valves, air filter service (or replace), drop all the fluids (good time to go synth), oil filter, brake bleed is good too....and a general once over...

There's annual services as well, which are basically brake and clutch fluids I believe. Some say don't worry about them until the fluid starts to get dark. If you have ABS, you might want to let a dealer flush the brake fluid. Also, if you have the original battery, I'd replace it while you're at it.

I do the equivalent of a 12K service every spring, all the oils, filters, etc.
What's the saying, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" or something like that. Besides, it's a good time to give the bike a once over before the riding season.
