Thanks Roger!!

Hey still need to hook up sometime soon!!! TWS is just around the corner!!! Need to setup so I don't toss the 12s down the road!!!

I have the itch again I think its time to get back to racing again!! I find myself looking at bikes and refering to them as "that would make a great Track Bike"!! I wonder if there is any hidden meaning to that???

Later

He is not.

JC, you better sell a ton of Ss to finance this. It'll eat your brain and wallet.

Still, we all have to choose our own demise. This one's kinda fun.

Yes, pop on by. Thought you might drop by last weekend. When are you going to TWS? Can you come by this weekend? Or one evening beforehand?

Looks like the BST wheels are at a good price. Next year they'll be at $5000 if china keeps buying CF the way they are.

It's not just China - according to this excerpt from one supplier's website (www.fiberglast.com), the bulk of carbon material is being consumed by Airbus and the U.S. military - "...[there are] more than 350 carbon-epoxy parts on the F-22 Raptor and the developmental Joint Strike Fighter is projected to be between 25 and 30 percent composite by weight. The F22 Stealth fighter, the Blackhawk helicopter, the unmanned predator drone as well as body armor, helmets, holsters and a variety of other military applications are gobbling up carbon fiber as fast as it can be produced.

Additionally, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is scheduled to start operating in 2008. The enormous commercial jet is half carbon fiber...The Airbus Superjumbo A380 and A350 are also extensively carbon fiber and are expected to fly in 2006 and 2010, respectively...Airbus reportedly ordered over 100 A380’s, each of which uses approximately 70,000 metric tons of carbon fiber. One estimate of the entire sporting goods industry’s usage is 200,000 tons..."

I do a little carbon as a hobby - one yard of basic structural twill is now around $80 and one yard of cosmetic use 5HS weave is about $60 - that's for one yard of cloth - if you can find it. Certified carbon is almost impossible to find, uncertified carbon is rarely in stock more than a few hours at a time.

That's pretty pricey for cosmetic CF... UltraSuede (aka Alcantara... the real stuff, not the knock-off microfibres being used for most mass-market furniture) is still upwards of $60/yard, depending on the color and thickness, unless you can find a fabric store that's closing or a good sale.

Hrm... CF accents for the frame, Alcantara seat cover and bag liners... you could really jack the price of the bike up in a hurry...

Thumbs up CF for Defense

Not perhaps a popular view on a motorcycle forum...BUT I would much rather that the military gets the lions share of the CF produced that they need and we can suffer along with a few less CF bobbles on our bikes or tuner cars...since I am on a tear..there are, for me, really very few CF do-das on bikes that I feel enhances the aesthetics..sure weight saving is key...but the CF look for me is cliched[ sp?]...again just for me and my tastes.

Just for price comparison, they list an Ohlins off-road steering damper for $677 and you can get the exact same thing from Scott's Performance for $330.

Toray Composites, the main supplier for virtually all the CF produced domestically, is in my hometown.
they're running, at last look 24X7X364 to keep up. Boeing is the major consumer, along with Lockheed-Martin and Northrup Grumman...the rest goes to golf club manus, so I am told. I was trying for a while to get my mitts on some weave 'that fell out of the back of the truck' to no avail. and of course they won't sell to non-commercial accounts.
Time for forged aluminum.

Heh. Toray makes most of the CF in the world, and also makes UltraSuede. And both materials are $60/yd... coincidence?

The Synthetic Material market is a heck of a business to be in nowadays...

Jony, Forged Aluminum, yeah. With a little imagination you could get some clear aluminum forged into a tank big enough for a whale!

r12 carbon wheels

those prices on the gorillazilla site are supposedly in RANDS and with their VAT of 14% added. if true, that would put the price of the rims in the ridiculously low, bargain of the century range. i've sent an e-mail to them to verify. i'm betting it's a mistake.
