I'm not much of a photographer, but I saw several photos of the rainbow here, and then I remembered I took a couple of snapshots from my home window of this curious double bow:

I've read about how rainbows appear, but I'm not sure why there were two, unless maybe if the rain was falling in 2 distinct layers?

If you notice, the second rainbow is in reverse color order, with red on the inside instead of the outside.

It's more a matter of the strength and position of the light source to be able to refract twice within the same raindrop, rather than from two separate rain bands.

Nice picture Fenring, very interesting, thanks for the lesson John. I never noticed the color difference before, we get double rainbows out here in AZ during the monsoon sometimes. Here is a pic of one I took last year.

You're right! I hadn't noticed that before. Just checked the wiki page on rainbows and for sure, the second bow is created by the double reflection inside the raindrop, so it's dimmer and inverted. That is so cool.

The photos also illustrate "Alexander's Dark Band" first documented by Alexander the Great. Between the 2 rainbows the wave phases of the different colors are 180 degrees opposing, so they cancel each other, effectively subtracting that light from the background. The area between the rainbows is significantly darker.

Thanks for all the Rainbow pics...

From the Book of Genesis Chapter 9, verses 13-17 (New International Version)

13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds,

15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.

16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth."

17 So God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth."

Please park your rather pathetic religious revelries somewhere else.

So... all posts must be in agreement with your personal religious views from now on???

signit98 07-13-2008 07:05 PM

Got Road... I am not religious at all, but Dan is one of the few people I know who is religious, yet DOES NOT try to cram it down your throat...! I personally respect him very much for that and I have to agree with Bill here.

I'd say, just leave it alone... if you have been following my posts, you know how tough that must be for me! :D

We should never try to justify our core values and from whence they come by attacking another's. Although this forum is neither political nor religious, the comment on rainbows should be honored as being substantiated by one of the most widely read books in the history of the world. In the context of this off-topic thread it stands as the comments of another beemer rider inspired to post by some very beautiful pictures. Live and let live. Now, I believe a word about the temperature of light may be the next in response to the rainbow pictures: but, no matter how small we disect it-something created it.

BTW Ralf, I'd submit that you are religious about motorcycles. lol

You have a point there, Bubba... I guess - if you look at it that way - I am "religious" about many a things... ;)

GotRoad give the man a break, he wasn't on the soapbox. If you are athiest, you must remember tolerance. It is hypocritical to call out religions and the divisions they create and lash out at biblical text. You must lead by example.Cool heads must prevail or you look like your typical fundamentalist regardless of religion, that you loathe.Being secular I've read the bible, koran, budhist, hindu, and other obscure texts. There are bits of truth in every one of them, I just can't follow any.I have Christians in my family of the flat earth variety, but we still manage to find common ground...

Hey, GotRoad, (or is that GotSatan) I've got a better idea. Why don't you park your pathetic personality somewhere else!

wswartzwel 07-14-2008 10:38 AM

Saw this the other day in Memphis.

Well I'm sitting here thinking a response from me is necessary "GotRoad?". I can give you the benefit of a doubt and assume you've had some negative experiences with religious folk...I'll be the first to admit the Church has misrepresented God in many ways and many times.

If I meet you out on the road one day I'd be glad to extend a hand of friendship to you as I would any of the other Pelicans. You are a valued member here and your comments are necessarily part of the landscape...especially when it comes from your heart.

I'll feel allot better if we just forget the whole thing happened to tell you the truth...I'd much rather count you as a friend if that's OK with you.

I must admit I'm encouraged by the support from others here as well...but Guys lets not be so hard on "GotRoad?"...I believe he's speaking his heart here and it deserves some consideration. Maybe he was wronged by a Christian?...for certain we don't know and he may not want to say anymore about it either.
