bmw tire repair kit
hey all, I'm looking to replace my used up tire repair kit that came with the bike. Has anyone replaced the original one and if so how much? If not, any recommendations on a kit to use? I'd be nice if it fit in the same stow space under the seat. btw, the stock kit worked well and saved my ass. thanks

I carry the Stop'N Go kit with extra cartridges. I found their plugging system better than the BMW one. I keep everything in the side pouch of the tank bag.

Stop'n Go is the only way to go (after a flat).

I use a Dynaplug kit to plug the hole. It's supposed to be the only "approved" plug kit in Europe.
Then I bought a Slime pump. Keep both in my tankbag. |

cost ~25 buck I think
used the BMW kit on several occasions without any problems and ridden away, though I do not use the CO2 but my air pump

BMW sells replacement plugs if you just want to replenish the kit that comes with the bike. The CO2 cartridges in the BMW kit are widely available, but you have to make sure they're threaded to be able to use the inflator that comes with the kit. The glue is standard vulcanizing rubber cement.
Personally, I've had terrible luck with the Stop-N-Go kit. Many have reported that the steel belts saw the mushroom and cause it to fail prematurely. I've never had a SNG plug hold for more than 50 miles or so. On a recent rental, the bike was equipped with this kit which uses the standard string plugs: http://www.genuineinnovations.com/motorprods.aspx?subcat=11&prodid=1059 I thought this was the best sorted kit I've seen and I'm getting a couple to put on all my bikes. It has two triple-size CO2s to give you at a solid two shots at inflation. I've never had a string plug fail. For long distances, I think it makes sense to carry an electric pump so you're not relying on C02 to get you home. (I've had some punctures where there was no foreign object and it took a lot of filling and water to finally find the puncture. Or there was such a hard-to-find slow leak that limping home, filling the tire every 50 miles was the only solution.) I like the Slime compressor the best. I like that it has SAE electrical plug on it's side so I can power it with my vest cord. http://www.slime.com/product.php?product=50001 - Mark Last edited by markjenn; 03-27-2007 at 03:27 PM.. |
