O2 Sensor Wires
 

I replaced my exhaust a couple of months ago, and in the process of trying to remove the O2 Sensor(or lack of) I had to cut all the wires. Before cutting all the wires I marked one of the white wires(there's two) with a black marker so I could connect the correct wire to it's mate once I put the O2 sensor back. Well, through the course of handling the 02 sensor I accidently wiped off the mark and just guessed which one went where. The bike runs, but did I mess something up if I switched up the two white wires? I'm just about to do my 12k service myself and don't want to be chasing red herrings trying to tune my bike in if it's the O2 sensor causing problems.

you could just get a replacement and connect it to the wire loom like the original. it is bundled up under the bodywork on the right side of the bike.

Yup. Sounds crappy on laptop speakers, but real nice on my home desktop system.

I'm a little confused by the firste reply, I just need to splice the "correct" two wires together.

I have spliced in two different sensors and found no way to match the white wires. Was I lucky both times? Maybe, it has worked fine for many miles in both cases.

what i was referring to requires no splicing as you buy a new part from BMW and simply plug it in, in place of the old one. but splicing works fine as well.

Not that it will help at this point, but why cut the wires? When I changed my mid-pipe out, I unscrewed the bung, then when re-installing I unwound it the right amount and when installed it sits in there with everything straight. I've never heard of the need to cut the wires. Besides...having an unnecessary splice down at such a dirty section of the bike is kinda buckwheat. Get the replacement like repoe3 suggests and do it right is what I think.

There is a good size $$ difference between a new BMW sensor and a new Bosch replacement.

The sensor was fused into the cat and I couldn't get enough leverage/angle on it to get it out. Though I had the bike on a bike lift and with tie downs, I was making some serious rocking action when I tried to get the sensor off.

So rather then take the risk of dumping over the bike, I thought I would much rather have a few spliced wires then a multi piece fairing.

Shouldn't matter if you have two wires with the same color reversed as they are just for the heater. In fact, you probably would notice no engine difference without the O2 sensor connected or with the heater wire(s) disconnected. Just a chance your carbon cannister would have a 10% shorter life, if you have one.

The heater wires are the only ones carrying any current to speak of so be sure you have a low-resistance solder joint.

Is there any chance you can take the fairing/tank off and trace the wire back to the factory connector?

If xk49 wanted to replace the wire from connector to O2 sensor, what type and gauge should he use? Assuming one can recrimp so it works in the factory connector.

The cans and cat eliminator is from Two Brothers. The cans are the M2 series.
