MOYBIN O2 sensor

Moybin

How about an update on the replacement O2 sensor you have talked about before. Did you ever install the Bosch 13474 sensor? How did it work? Any trouble matching up the wiring? How did you come up with the 13474 as a replacement?

I am cheap and looking for info on these sensors.

Yes the install is done. Added about 6 inches of wire to the overall setup, which makes it easier to install/remove. So far weather has not cooperated well to let me check mileage, but everything seems to be running smoothly. I installed a K&N air filter AND a Two Brothers Racing cat eliminator pipe at the same time, so things will be certainly different. OBSSSN sounds a lot better, even the wife likes the throatier, more masculine sound of the bike. Will post gas mileage figures when I get a couple of tanks of gas through the beast.

When you wired up the new sensor did the wire colors match? I can't find where but I thought you said a white, black and two greys. Dose it matter how the greys are connected?

Funny you would mention that. I was just messing with my original, with which I managed to actually grind 3 of the 4 wires off right at sensor surface level. Factory has black, gray, white and white.

Anyway, here is what Moybin sent me...

I dug up the part number. Purchased at AutoZone; Bosch 13474 oxygen sensor. Cost me $69.99 plus tax. AutoZone part number is 231336 (I think).

You will need to butt crimp or solder the 4 leads together. I put about an extra 6 inches of length into the overall loom. Connect black to black, gray to gray, and the 2 white wires can go on either white wire. So much for wiring polarity.

Thanks, CK. My earlier post was in error stating 2 gray wires. It is correctly 2 white wires. There appears to be no polarity with these 2 wires, just connect and forget.

ps: initial indications are that it is working correctly. I'm getting 33.5 mpg in mixed open country and city driving. Engine is very smooth and the slight back-fire "pop" on hard down-throttle has been reduced. I did install a cat eliminator (TBR) and a K&N air filter at the same time that I replaced the O2 sensor. Bike has 77k on odometer. YMMV.

Thanks CK and Moybin. My bike has always surged badly and now with a Laser cat eliminator and chip I also have the big bang going on. Over the years I have tried adjusting all the things I could for the surge which is why I now want to try a new O2 sensor.

A sensor is a sensor isn't it? Just curious what the differences would have been between the old style and new. Probably just the connector?

CK: my understanding (without seeing the actual parts) is that the BMW motorad part is an exact replacement with the special plug and all. The one I bought is a 'generic' before-CAT sensor which the folks over on ADVrider had used with success. So far things seem to be working properly. My set up as bought was open circuited by removal of the CAT code plug. I made a switch set so I can change the CAT code any time I want. Currently running the code for the K&N and the missing cat converter.

My personal opinion: the stock or near-stock R11S has ample torque and HP for real-world operation. Why anyone would want more HP is beyond me, I've got enough zoom right now to get into trouble mighty fast. I'm looking to make the bike as smooth and trouble-free as possible, and to get a nice exhaust note, which I now have.

I thought I had mine connected again, but two wires came off. I only have about 1/8" of wire protruding from the sensor to try and crimp the wires back onto. if I could get it to hold I wouldn't need to buy one.

Seems too much additional torque and HP would result in other parts starting to break on the bike (specifically clutch/drivetrain somewhere). Its just fine for me as is. Especially once I'm out on the open road.

Think I have mine all crimped back together now, tightly taped and plugged back in. Problem is, how will I know if its making contact and working now? Is there a fault code or anything?

I would unplug it and see if I get some readings with a volt/Ohmn meter coming out of the sensor lead
