Angry Your NC DOT tax dollars at work!

Would it kill the state of North Carolina DOT to post when a road switches from pavement to gravel...........especially when it is at the top of a hill? Holy Crap, I have never hit one of these situations before riding in NC. I'm sure they exist elsewhere, but in less than 7 trips in NC, I came upon 3 of these roads where without warning, and inevitably around a turn or just over the top of hill, the road turns to gravel.....WTH is wrong with the DOT here, are they nuts or what?!?

By the grace of God, I didnt toss into the gravel

Be careful out there.....Robert

They had a stretch of that on Hwy 1 south of Big Sur when they were doing some road repairs. Gets your attention when you've hopped a bump at about 80.

Ditto in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana...sometimes with sign and sometimes not.

It does????

Heh. Devirginized my un-broken bone record that day. Remember that like yesterday. Bastards. Luckily, the turn is soft in your photo, and not a 90 degree lefthander with steeper decent, but still problematic.

My dad noted that last year some guy got killled on a moto on the gravel swept into a T intersection in Green co. For the rest of the year there were Gravel Ahead signs marked as if they were nuclear radioactive waste sites.

With dearest sympathy

Glad to hear your day turned out better than mine. Out with a small crew this past October we ran into a gem of a setup at the border between Jackson and (yes...) Translvania Country in NC along state highway 281.

A decently paved road crests a hill, and just as it begins to pitch downward (with the trees conspiring and putting shadows in just the wrong place) it suddenly goes to thumb-sized gravel with beautiful rain ruts and a nice tree-lined dropoff into the woods. All damages that day were of the sore-for-three-days, ego-bruised, and bike-cosmetic-sort, but damn was it unpleasant.

It's worth being careful if you're crossing county lines. Personal observation in Pennsylvania, Texas, and North Carolina says that no two counties seem to care about the same road in the same way.

The grass growing through the asphalt was a sign it was one of those roads less traveled. I run on roads all the time like that here, the GS is a better choice for them.

The worst thing I've experienced (the R12RT didn't make it) is when they do resurface the road and the old asphalt was taken up just prior that the soft pulverized leftovers are used to raise up the shoulder to the new level. There's no muscleing you way back to the pavement once you're in it. If you're from the coast in the southeast it's the same as pluff mud--looks firm but ain't.

What you guys are talking about is just a warm-up for riding in northwest Arkansas, where gravel roads are deliberately cut so that they intersect with the highways on downhill curves. Much finer natural gravel washes onto the pavement, and you'll go down in the blink of an eye.

Warning signs, makes way too much sense. We got too many worthless ba$tards to keep up in this state. This gubment is losing it, on all levels in all states. But, we have a great edumacation system and our health care is da best, right!! Sorry for the rant, just fed up with the system.

Anyway, take care.

Well all the roads are marked in Georgia. No unpaved sections . Lane and Robert its GMR time. Give me a call. The warning signs say fast speeds accepted!

They call it pluff mud 'cause that's roughly the sound it makes as the unsupecting tourist disappears beneath its surface... never to be seen again. "Damn! His wallet went down with him." We hate it when that happens.
