I've ridden with the slipper clutch in my 08 1200GS for over a thousand miles so far. Where I live and ride, the roads are as gnarly as you'll find. I have a dirt bike; this machine is my tight road sport bike, Ohlins sprung, and it's the best machine I've ever owned. I'm looking for the right "S" now; I was bummed that BMW gave up on such a superb machine.

I love the slipper! My downshifts are practiced over decades playing this game, and are as seamless as possible, but occasionally the monster torque can overcome the front wheel speed during downshifts, and I've had a few upsetting moments with the back tire moving around disconcertingly.

The clutch material is made by Sachs Racing Engineering (the same
manufacturer of the original clutch) and is the same ceramic material as
found in the clutch San Jose has used in all the road races it's
campaigned since '06. It is also the same as the Touratech Ceramic
clutch. It's one tough clutch. The sintered clutch friction material
will not smoke or burn and is almost indestructible. In fact, if it's
oiled up due to a bad seal, it can be simply cleaned with a brake clean
during seal replacement and it'll keep going and going.

You can read a decent road test of the clutch in the upcoming On The Level magazine
(www.bmwra.org publication) which incidentally has a monthly column dealing with BMW racing stuff now. You can also go to the Fat Cat website in Germany (www.fat-cat.eu) and watch the entertaining animation they made. The clutch is not merely a racing piece; it's also a safety item that, like ABS, may one day save your plastic (or in the HP2 S case, carbon fiber.
