New tires: Metzeler Sportech M-3
OK-
My Sportech m-1's have lasted about 3600 miles, and I want to replace them. I hear the Sportech m-3's last longer and have better stick... I want to hear from anybody who has put miles on the M-3's and has an idea of how long they last. Seems I can't find anybody who has put miles on them... Thanks |

I ran a couple of sets of M-3 on my R1100S and got on the high end of the scale of miles out of them compared to other sticky tires, such as D208s, Qualifiers, Pirelli Diablos, Pilot Sports, and Pilot Powers. I got the most miles out of Pilot Powers, surprisingly. The M-3s seemed to give about 10% less, which was second-best. But I liked the feel of the M-3s better than the Powers, and so far they're my favorite.

I'm on my 2nd set of M3s, and in my case the milage is about the same as with the M-1s; about 3.5K/rear. As for the way the M3s feel: to me they are better than the M-1s, & about the same as Dunlop 208s. I saw M-1s on the SWmotire web site, but the price was about the same as the M-3s so why bother.

You got 3600 miles out of an M-1 rear? Fuuuuck. You'll never wear out a set of M-3s.

I am on my Third set of M-3s on my R12S and I have done track days and normal street riding!!! I love them......they are sticky the heat up quickly and they are great in the rain!!! They one thing I like about the M-3s is that they dont square off like the m-1s did they flaten out but they still stay round!!! One thing negative though is when they go away they go away!!!! Other than that I perfer them over the Michellins and everything else except the new Perilli Super Corsa IIIs Those are the nicest dual compound tire I have ever run!!!
Funny doesn't Perelli own Meztler now????? Jc

M3 front and Z6 rear. I've only got about 1500 miles on them but no wear indicated. I'll keep you posted on longevity. I could only get 2300-2500 on the M1. The Pereli Diablo front and Strada rear was a good combo also.

You will love them, sticky enough to touch the cylinder heads on the track, and wear like iron. I like them so much I have 3 sets in the basement just waiting to be used. As dlose to the perfect tire as I have ever found

I have used 9 sets of M3s on R11S, K12S, and R12S BMWs. You will not need anymore than they offer unless you are really, really, good. Strong in the rain, don't squirm under severe front wheel braking, heat up very quickly, stick good enough to bend WAY over, turn in quick without stuttering, and wear fairly well. Who cares about wear anyway............sticky tires are the best insurance money can buy.

R12S tire wear
I've just replaced the rear M1 for the second time (2600 mi & 2000 mi for 1st and 2nd) along with the front at 4600 mi. I've never had a bike eat tires on the street the way the R12 does, as both times the rear tire was approaching Maypop territory when I changed it. The front had some life left, but was close enuf and starting to scallop, so out it went. I've replaced with Conti Road Attacks this time, which seem to work as well as the M1's did at least in the dry. After about 350 miles the embossed "Conti Road Attack" writing is nearly gone from the center third of the tire, and fairly worn even at the outer edges, so I'm wondering how well even this sport/tour version is going to last.
Doesn't make sense to me as I ride my CBR11XX at least as hard as the R12 and routinely get 4000-5000 miles from a back tire. Only thing I can figure is the extra 10 lb/ft of torque the R12 has over the XX, although the XX outweighs the R12 by quite a bit and has significantly more HP. Go figure. If the Conti's wear out as fast as they look like they will, I'll probably try Bridgestones Sport/Tour compounds next as that's what seems to stick and wear well on the XX. Any thoughts as to getting better tire life or alternative brand suggestions (forget slowing down as an option) will be appreciated. Cloudy |

I ride pretty hard so I guess I'll be eating tires on a regular basis. Trying the Corsa IIIs right now. Love them.

the tires are gobbled up by the fact that it's a twin cylinder engine.
a twin "punches" the rear wheel around in a circle. an in-line four "rapidly slaps" the rear around in a circle. punching eats more of the rear tire than slapping.

So my R12 is a little "punchy" then?

And my XX must be "slappy"? That would make more sense if I didn't get 4500 to 6000 miles out of the rear tires on my '93 Daytona Moto-Guzzi, which isn't down all that much on Torque/HP compared to the R12S. Got at least similar mileage out of my old CR 900 Duck too, although it was substantially less powerful.
