A switch to 190/55 rear tire seemed to help mine with the speedometer inaccuracy, so I guess the speed pick-up is from the rear, though I can't confirm that. I am surprised somebody hasn't sued the manufacturers over this issue as it would appear to shorten the advertised warranty. Cars now days are almost spot on accurate, again I assume for this reason?

The odo on mine is right but the speedo was off. I used an electronic device to correct it but then the odo was off. Fried the device when I installed the HID headlight then made a new faceplate so now the speedo and odo are both correct.

Back when I had a pedantic interest in these sort of things I tested my speedometers on all my bikes versus my gps out on I-70 in aa nice flat zone between Thompson & Green River...
The speedometer seemed to be right on at 60 mph... But the variances would occur at the lower and higher speeds, and not consistent. And as I have said here before, why is this difficult... And no it's not a law... My Harley-Davidson is 100% exactly right on at all speeds. Don't think they are then purposely making them less accurate when they export the bikes overseas.

Didn't say USA law, did I? (Hah, as if ANYTHING about a Harley has relevance!)
Sorry, can't post a pdf so this is simple copy/paste ... Service Bulletin BMW Motorcycles Bulletin No: 62 001 02 (003) Date: January 2002 © 2002, BMW of North America, LLC Page 1 of 1 Revised Information - Permissible Speedo Advance, All Models. Speedometer advance is necessary to compensate for the negative tolerances in tire sizes between tire manufacturers, electric speedometer indication, and other factors. This advance reduces the risk of the speedometer displaying a speed that is less than the vehicle’s actual speed. The maximum amount of speedometer advance is 10% of the vehicle’s actual speed plus 2.4 mph. Actual speed=55 mph 55 x 10% = 5.5mph; 5.5 mph + 2.4 mph = 7.9 mph. Permissible displayed speed is from 55 to 62.5 mph. The displayed speed must never be less than the actual speed. No repairs or replacement should be attempted if the speedometer advance is within 10% plus 2.4 mph. With the general availability of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) as well as other electronic navigational aids for motorcycle applications, the presence of speedometer advance in BMW motorcycles may once again be questioned. Whether the GPS is purchased through BMW Motorcycles or through an aftermarket source, the presence of speedometer advance in BMW speedometers and the reason for the advance, remain. Please emphasize the “Important Note” detailed below with your customers, The original equipment speedometer, as supplied with your BMW motorcycle, is the only instrument to be used in judging the motorcycles speed relative to all legal and posted speed limits. Thomas J. Plucinsky Pat Raymond General Manager Service and Technical Manager BMW Motorcycles (201) 307 4261 pat.raymond@bmwna.com The presence of a speedometer advance in no way affects the mileage limitations of the 3 yr/36,000 mile Limited Warranty, or the frequency of the service intervals as recommended by BMW Motorcycles. These limitations and intervals are gauged soley by the mileage indicated on the motorcycle’s odometer.

I corrected the speedo error on my LT by playing with some jumpers on the speedo's circuit board. Worked like a charm.
Often wondered if something similar could be done with the S. Re: Getting into the speedo |

Well, I just received my speedohealer and discovered that the BMW version is a universal-fit type deal. They want me to tap into the speedo sensor and wire-in a connection. I havent looked at the speedo sensor set-up on the bike yet but I'm not gonna cut my darn wires.
Has anyone fooled with their speedo pick-up? Is there a connector that I can un-attach and maybe rig in the speedo wiring without cutting anything ? |
