Ball joint bearings falling out?!
I was crawling around on the garage floor and I kept finding these under my knees, still fresh and greasy
![]() HMMMMM. The second place I looked seemed very suspect, rubber boot ripped and a void where balls might oughtta be? ![]() RealOEM just shows it as one piece to be replaced as a unit. ![]() There should be balls in there inside the boot and not on my garage floor, right? This is unsettling.

Wow. Paul how many miles? My bike only has 16,000 but it seems like I get a knock sound every now and then from the front. I`ll be looking at that. Thanks.

I think losing your steel balls is much worse than losing your bearings.

All the ball bearings came out of a wheel on my mechanics crawler. I was finding those all over the garage.

That at least makes sense. Have yet to see a ball joint with ball bearings.

Had a girlfriend once with an old style bug, well twice. Anyway she leaves for a four day trip but is back in about 20 minutes. There is a loud squeak in the front end. I look and no boot on one of the balljoints so I spray it with WD40. As I bounce it up and down, the squeak is gone but on the fourth bounce the balljoint separates and the front suspension collapses. Wow, it could have or would have happened at speed on the freeway if she had not come back.

Can you change the title to "false alarm" before all the nay-sayers start short-sightedly posting about it?
Did you see the guy and the plan behind this: www.bmwfinaldrive.com Look down the list. There's quite a few past 36K, which beyond that, really doesn't seem like much to complain about. But people will. I personally think that the FD failures are apparently a problem, but this guy is taking it to NHTSA. I don't like the thought of this leading to BMW entirely pulling the line from liability issues. If you want reliability, buy a Honda. Last edited by Sideshow_S; 02-25-2008 at 07:06 PM.. |
