The Most Expensive S Seat in the World
Gather 'round cowpokes! It's Saddle Talk Time!
Yeehaw! O.K., some o' you Ultra Mods call them seats, bum pads, whatever. Fact is I'm now the self-proclaimed King S Seat Tryer-Outer...yep, I've tested a few (except the Sargent) The Sargent is one I liked the look of, attention to detail, a very nice product. A friend had a Sargent on his RS and it seemed adequate, really well thought out, and very light. I called them up and got the long version of "personal service", however for the price I wasn't convinced, and too many "ifs" and too far away for my money... At any rate, at the risk of sounding like Suze Orman, I've said it before, "The seat, then the pegs, then the bars, then the windscreen"... that's my formula and I'm shtickin' to it. So here's a quick compendium for our beloved Pelly Info R1100S Forum for newbies and oldbies alike, you others just turn and look away... Saddle 1: OEM Stocker Yes, I even tried the slice-the-foam-flat-with-a-bread-knife trick, but not much in result. Even with the comfort bars and Suburban Peg kit, with the stock suspension, that seat, and some long hours on the new bike, I'm sure I suffered permanent scrotal damage riding for the first 6 months...'nuff said on that subject...NEXT! OEM Saddle ![]() Saddle 2: Custom Tailored Corbin Got this baby from a Pelly member, a custom contoured Corbin that put me in the pocket. Not like a standard, this baby had an extra 2" behind your bum and had the "wings" shaved off (ridges that cut into your legs on a off the shelf Corbin). I really liked it, nice and flattish, except like most Corbin's it was hard...hard to Ride On!...(sick!). ![]() Saddle 3: BCR Comfort Seat ...O.K., I had to try it, hey, it was for sale!...a great alternative for the $$$, I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a flatter than OEM saddle at a descent price. (under $300) Basically, more padding, less slope. ![]() But for me personally, the height put me back on my dainty wrists, after the Corbin I felt like I was teetering atop a bone breaker, then my buddy PVR tried it and liked it so much I let him have it...he is 6'5" and has the Suburban Peg kit with comfort bars on his '02 S...a perfect match. Saddle 4: Standard Corbin Our old friend S-Man left S-World for the ways of Aprilia and was selling off his stuff...well, I got the seat, a beautiful spankin' new Corbin (again!?!), carbon weave standard...how could I pass it up? It looked great on the bike, allowed a very flat perch, lot's of room for a guy with a bigass if he needed it (I don't)...but yes, hard and heavy as any C I've had...Jeez, what do they make these seat pans out of??? ![]() ...hey what's that diaper thingie?...a gel saddle pad...I got a hard seat! For Comparo, I took a pic of the Two Corbins... ![]() ![]() Notice the difference at the front where the flat part of the seat meets the edge...this is the main bixtch people have about the C-saddle. There is no progressive taper for your thighs at the front, rather a hard edge that tends to splay your legs out when stopped and tends to cut-off the circulation...if your paying the price for this heavy mutha buckaroos, beware...the only real way to go with this seat or the S is to have them sculpt this part in person at the factory...IMO. Pay close attention, this gets better...

Part Deux
Saddle 5: Bill Mayer Saddles
After a long trip on the C-seat I decided it was time to really put or shut-up, so I decided to go custom...I chose Bill Mayer Saddles in Ojai, CA...yes I wrote a little review, blah blah blah A beautiful seat, a nice experience, marginal improvement. Fact is, I brought a picture of the Wunderlich Comfort seat with me, it had the right taper at the thighs like my first Corbin, it was called a "comfort seat" (good), and was also flat-looking, and was as light as an OEM seat too! I showed the pic to Rocky and said "I want this shape"... ![]() ...and Rock said, " I'm not making somebody else's saddle!"... Okay Stop...I should have reeled in my $535+ and walked.. "Trust me" said Rocky..."you gonna love this seat!" I was impressed with the foam, yes, a very nice formula of materials and craftsmanship. In the end, I had a beautiful cush leather saddle, but I also still had some of the S-slope thingie... Doh! ![]() ...not to say that the BMS is a bad choice, and can even be "re-adjusted" by BMS, probably at minimal cost, but why not do it right the first time?... Then I bought my RT, so I decided I wouldn't be riding the S on long hauls anymore...and I swapped it for some other parts here at the Pelly... Saddle 6: The Most Expensive S Seat in the World... Well it's Xmas, and the bells are ringing (in my head), I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy (whisky) and I've got all my gift-giving in order... the kiddies stockings are full, the RT has a cozy new tankbag, and there in the corner is my pretty lil S without a seat all it's own...call it obsession, call it Koyaanasquatsi ... the world out of balance! Hey, I like closure. I need things completed, even if it's out of what the Italians call "gring gring". I called Santa Cruz BMW and ordered the Wunderlich Low Comfort $700!!! But hey, I'm thinkin' it might just be "The One".. Wunderseat Saddle ![]() Purdy ain't it? ![]() It has the correct shape at the front like the custom Corbin, it's low and fairly flat, it seems pretty cushy on my boney tushy, it's actually a couple OZ's lighter than the OEM, and has a nice no-slide material on the front portion. This seat was well thought out by someone who knew about the S... What does it all mean? Just spend the money the first time? I'll leave that up to you to go figure... How do I like it? Hey, I'm busy right now at work!...and there's a storm a'comin'! Gotta get the doggies in the barn! ![]()

The wife intends to have her r11s seat done here. We can ride down in the morning and wait for it, and try it as they cut and pad to her liking. Let you know how it turns out. I've seen some of his work and it looks very nice.

Looks nice, hope it's the ONE! Personally I think you went to the wrong Mayer brother. Should have ridden up to see Rick for a REAL custom saddle.

Bravo! Fine report, good pictures and plenty to chew on. You've done us all a great service and I appreciate it. Let us know when you've put some miles on that Wunderlich saddle and how it works for you.

frack me to tears...$700.00...whoah
![]() BTW, if you have the 'custom' corbin wITH the hump farther forward, that's what I want, and I'm interested IF IT'S AVAILABLE.(never have time for rich's up here to do the same thing and don't feel bad, I dropped mine off at rich's once and told them what I wanted and they *didn't* get it right without my bum on it, so I wasted $300.00)

as JB said, the correct Mayer for getting a BMW saddle is spelled Rick, not Rocky.
![]() and he won't bore you with stories of his brother, preferring to keep his personal history, well, personal. and he's a real rider, having run in this last year's edition of the Iron Butt (the big one, the 11K in 11 days IB) on his R1150RT.

That Korbin gets a lot of ass!
Hmm. . .if aftermarket seats didn't cost so much, maybe mine wouldn't feel so comfy as is. |
