OT-Project V-Max

In sept. of 08 I purchased a 1985 yamaha vmax off ebay. The seller told me it was in great shape, fully maintained and the whole 9 yards.

When I took delivery of the bike it was missing all over the place so I checked the air filter and found 10 dead baby mice and a chewed up air filter. I then checked the gas tank and found flakes of rust all over the inside of it.

Needless to say you can imagine how everything else looked....

Anyways I went ahead and started fixing everything and even added a few fun things along the way including:

-Front fork seals replaced

-Front fork springs replace

-Steering head bearings replaced

-Motor Removed and painted

-Valves adjusted with new gaskets

-Hayabusa brakes/calipers/rotors and lines

-1985 carbs replaced with 2005 carbs

-Morley Muscle Jet Kit installed on carbs (12RWHP upgrade) with tune

-Hindle exhaust with coated black headers

-Nitrous (40 HP shot) with progressive controller and purge kit (2.5lb bottle)

The bike was dyno'd at 122HP and 99TQ WITHOUT the nitrous at the rear wheel.

WITH the nitrous it dyno'd 165HP at the rear wheel. This would make it a tad over 200HP at the crank!

Here are some pics...

Did you alter the rpm at which the boost comes on ? Very thoughtful mods especially the head bearings , brakes and springs.

There are a couple of gizmos that will alter that boost points that can be selected by the rider. One just makes it 3K if its on and the other one has a couple of points to choose from. I can find them if you are interested in them. All the time on is favored by a couple of my friends though. Ours is stock too.

The max is not known for it's turning ability but the bottle was mounted there just for testing purposes. I plan on getting it somewhere outta the way but not sure where yet.

hahahahaha...I LOVE it.

it's a gas gas gas...

bottles aren't just for babies.

some for the car, some for the driver

Now it's time to add 8 OZ of Price Fuels max race to some pump premium...

https://www.pricechemical.com/Max_Race.html

if 90 isn't enough and 165 is just about right, 200 is even better..after all it IS a vmax..

I love it.

The RH lower frame has a removable section.... Check the torque on those 4 bolts frequently, as they tend to loosen a bit over time, and allow the frame to flex.

Really fun bikes to play around with... See if you can get a discount for buying rear tires in bulk..

OK...Ours is a 2003 box stock except for better fork springs and a slip on Supertrapp.

Neat bike but I'd sure watch those left-handers.

Is this what I need for my hotrod R12S or would I be screwing up the O2 sensors? Isn't nitro caustic?

Yes indeed! The max's frame is known to "flex"

When I had the motor out I did update to solid motor mounts.

Did you get the progressive springs? That's what I upgraded to.

Yes we did. That front end needs all the help it can get. We didn't put the Furbur fix mod in yet. Maybe when we get the new bearings. After we bought it (also EBay), we suspected the former owner had cranked the bearings down as it weaved all over the place. I suspect he had gotten into some high speed handling problem and figured he'd make a steering damper out of it one way or another. We backed it off a little and it cured the weaving. Still some work to do on ours.

These older maxes seem to all have the same problems. When I got mine it had NO FRONT BRAKE! The brake reservoir was dry as the sahara!

The great part about them is how easy they are to work on. It's hard to believe back in 1985 ANY bike had this kind of power. It must have been a pure street terror (and still is).
