OT Blue Water Fever
It's been quite a few years since I had "Blue Water Fever." By that I mean a compelling desire to sail on the ocean on a cutter or sloop rigged sailboat. I've been looking at live aboard length 36 to 41 feet. The problem is that one of the scooters will have to go if the fever persists. The HP2S is the likely candidate due to its limited utility versus the R12RT. The thought of listening to the luff of the sails is a fantastic experience that I really want to do again while I can still handle the sails.
I contracted the fever in the Florida Keys. Last edited by Guest24; 04-01-2009 at 02:59 PM.. |

Bubba, shame on you, I love sailing.
My sister and her husband have a Beneteau 40 that they sail and I became a qualified skipper on a 67' Alden Yawl that was stationed out of Marina Del Rae in S Calif. That old boat was built in the 30's. Er...uh....um, that was back in the late 60's when I worked for Aerostar... A boat is a hole in the ocean that you pour tons of money. the happiest days of owning a large boat are the day that you bought it and the day that you sell it. Take care friend.

Your sister and her husband must also have a lot of money, Dean
![]() What I really love about the Beneteaus is that you can drive these things backwards like a car... the only sailboat that behaves like that! Bubba, go as long as you can... anything over 40' is decent for live aboard... if you go less that that, it is even more of a compromise that it already is - if that makes sense. I often stay for weekends on my boat... sometimes the odd week at Catalina Island... but a week gets long already. And the Catalina 30' is one of the roomiest 30 footers out there... compares to many 32 footers out there.

Anyways, good luck with your boat. I've always wanted to learn to sail but don't have a mentor and am too stingy to pay for sailing lessons. I did buy a book on it though. So if you need a crew... ![]() I just don't think I'd ever be able to remember all of the arcane terms. I can see me now: "Release the watchamajigger and unfurl that thingy up front!" I'd be happy just doing some lake sailing. Not sure I would trust my fledgling skills on the ocean. The price of failure can be pretty high out there.

Not sure what all that means, but I was rolling on the floor laughing so hard I couldn't read it all. Love it.

I spend most of my spare time and a lot of my money building the boat of my dreams. It is a Farrier F32R. I have a space here at my office in which to build. Have the floats and main hull together now. Currently working on laminating the exterior skin on the main hull this week. Should look something like this one when I am done... then I am off to the Caribbean for nice long sail..

That is way cool Danny. What is the hull speed? Do you have a layout of the main hull? Length and Beam Sail?
Dean, that Beneteau 40 is a big bucks boat. I'd have to run drugs for the cartell to afford such a jewel. I did find and older Beneteau 44 (project boat) that the Mizzus says "ain't no way" it has to be cruise ready from day one. I'm trying to get Chris to buy my HP2S and get you to ride it back from Arby's, that will be an endurance test, for a interim parts donor bike. He really needs to have two bikes if he's really going to compete the HP2S. |

I'll gladly ride the HP2S to San Jose. Let me know, can leave anytime.

The details on the F32 can be found here: http://www.f-boat.com/pages/news/f32new.html I am building the "traditional" interior layout... is shown mid way down the page. Water line is about 32', beam is 23.5' (folds to 9.5') and length overall is about 43' with the retractable bow sprit taking most of extra length. Top speed is about 25 knots... my current boat F-27 will do up to 20 knots so the numbers are real.. Hitch a ride on an F boat for a sail some time. I think the profile of a performance motorcycle rider is closer to a mulithull than a mono.. Of course length for length the trimaran can't match the (sorry!) Buick like accommodations of the mono..

okay, so it wasn't a tri-hull, but it was a flat-bottom pickle fork thing with a monster motor.
basically a drag racing boat we thought might be tame enough for spirited skiing. we were wrong. was a whole lot of fun to build! scary to drive. terrifying to total up the cost. sold it just days before it killed me. your idea looks much better! can i borrow your f-32 when it's finished? ps: never mind. you're building the R model. that's probably beyond my sailing skill set.

Any one of the F boat things will give you a good thrill when it starts to blow and they get up and go...lots of flying water. First few times it'll scare the piss out of you..doesn't matter what your level of sailing skill is if you are not used to a tri...
Sounds like the hi-per motor boat will do the same thing...

Bubba, their 40 was the boat shown by Beneteau at the Houston Boat Show 2 years ago. It had every goodie in their accessorie availability catalog. Electric furling, auto pilot dual airconditioners and who knows what else. They had just sold a 32' Island Packet. They did get a deal because it was at the show.

i have to unsubscribe from this thread.
a friend is planning a round-the-globe family cruise for 2011. passed him the link to the F-boats. he called back and said his "broker" is trying to chase down one of the to-line, big-dog "sport cruising" F models for him, and thanx to you all for the tip. man, it sucks to know people that have so much money they don't know how much money they have!

Ralf, all they do is sail around Galveston Bay and not very far out into the Gulf of Mexico. I think primarily they use it as their Bay House.
For me, my dream has always been to sail to Hawaii and then on to the South Seas for 2 or 3 years. My preference is a big old wooden Sail boat of 50 to 60'. Bubba check this out. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/01/business/01boats.html?_r=3&hp

A wooden boat? WHOA, Dean... as beautiful as they are - and they are beautiful - do you know what you'd get yourself into? A few years ago, a friend proudly announced that he made the deal of a lifetime when he bought a wodden hull 60' sail boat for $15K. I just rolled my eyes. After 3 years of labor, another $20K and not a single hour of Sailing, he sold it for $10K. Amongst other points, he could NEVER stop the leaking, the boat had been more out of the water than in it... I don't think he'll ever buy a boat again... ANY boat. I for myself, I'll just stick with admiring them from afar... listening to the stories. It's bad enough what I have to to do mine to keep it going nicely... and I do all the work myself.

Dean, that's just lame to dump a boat when there a organizations that will take it as a donation. You get the tax write-off an they get funds for their charity.
Ralf, we haven't been this civil to each other in quite a while, maybe sailing has a beneficial effect on a pair on hair trigger posters. Dean, Mount Pleasant, SC is close to where I grew up on James Island, SC. I've got a couple of Beneteau's in the top 25 boats that I'm considering. But, this one really has my eye for what I want to do. Interesting name for a Catalina 42. Dean, I'm looking at a boat in Hawaii. Wanna help me crew it back through the Panama Canal? That's the new bridge for Charleston to James Island in the background. ![]() Here's a wooden boat for you Dean.
