Do cops write tickets when its raining????

So, on my way back from Georgia today. Very heavy rain all the way back... Most of the time visiblity was zip due to road spray and waves of downpour blowing down like a hurricane video... The only way I could keep my visor clear was to run at 80mph and get in front of any cars or trucks I came up on. (10 hours of extreme concentration buzzing between semis and lightning when I can't see 50 feet in front of me. I arrived home cold and soaked and a little hungry. I stopped only for gas, and pissing. I thought my skin was waterproof but after 10 hours I looked like a prune.
The R1100S is probably the best bike I have ever owned for traveling in bad weather... wind blasts, 2 inch standing water, 18 wheelers trying to pinch me off from passing.... it handled it all very nicely. Always stable and confidence inspiring... It is a good traveling companion.

Here's the deal, I did not see a single patrol car for 600 miles except the ones that were helping the motorists that had hydroplaned all over the median in Tennessee.

Do they not run radar when it is raining and storming???

I may start riding in the rain more often if thats the case

How did you get a picture from your trip down I-40 to use as your avatar???

Glad you made it home safe and sound, I was watching the weather radar and knew you were in the thick of it all day.

It was a pleasure meeting you and the other PP crew.

And to answer your question, I believe radar is ineffective in heavy rain do to too much "noise" from the rain.

I was wondering about the "noise" issue....

Thanks again for loaning me the shirts... I put the polyprop shirt on against my skin and a tee shirt over that... leathers, then my rain jacket... The deluge in Chatanooga had me soaked... I forgot which bag I put the long john shirt in so I just monitored myself for signs of hypothermia... The rain in Arkansas was much colder...

I was giggling most of the way home. It was an Adventure... I won't forget anytime soon.

Send me your address again, and i will get them fumigated, cleaned and shipped back to you...
Good thing the shirt was black.. my leathers bled dye and my lower legs and forearms were stained..

Hey Bill you could be onto something there!

The only time I have been picked up by a coppa in the rain - he pulled in front of me and then signalled for me to get into his car?

I got in and closed the door and he said "I've been getting out in the rain all day"...

Oh well thank you very bloody much I thought - you poor thing!

Then he gave me a ticket.

Charmed I'm sure. I got back out into the rain with my ticket and he drove off.

Man, I haven't been picked up for soooo long - touch wood

Did you ride I40 all the way back? I think the cops just don't run radar there on that stretch. On my trip through there last week I never saw a single cop.

On another note though, I have never seen an AR cop running radar and once you cross into Tx there are always cops running radar. But last week I saw 4 in Ar, and then none in Texas.

I did run i-40.... both ways.... saw several on the way there, but none on the way back....

On the way to the rally I was running 85 and I stood up to stretch my legs... crested a hill and went by one in the median while I was standing.... I grabbed my leg like I was having a charley horse

He didn't stop me...

Nope...my cop buddy says he never writes tickets in the rain...and he also says that when one gets away from him in the wind, he just says, "Have a nice day."

The one time a cop did stop me in my cage during a very heavy cold rain, she gave me the ticket to sign, and I took it and very carefully read over the ticket and the fine print and asked many many questions...all the while rolling my window up to a crack when I started getting cold. I think I had her standing out in the 38 degree downpour (without rain gear) for over 15 minutes before I finally signed the ticket. She was really pissed, but hopefully she learned something from her experience.

The lesson she probably learned was, "shoot first, ask questions later."

George, TX and ARK share their Ka band radar. They alternate weekly.

Bill, I think lasar is almost unuseable in the rain and many depatements are going exclusively to lasar.

yeah, im sure she learned that a police officer has grounds to stop you, they have the authority to order you out of the vehicle, and always wear proper rain gear.

While I'm glad you worked her over, I'm also glad you got a ticket for breaking the law AND making her stand in the rain.

Bubba, I've been lucky to not get a ticket on that stretch in the 3-4 yearly trips i've done the past 8 years... but by saying that I'm sure my next trip will net me a ticket

Just getting back to something Bill said, I too - often stand on my pegs for 10-20k's sometimes, to relieve the butt and boredom.

Is it considered dangerous and is worth a ticket, who says you have to be seated?

I've never heard of anyone getting cited for that here in Cali... don't know if it's legal or not. Seems silly to cite for that though. Is one armed steering just as dangerous?? What makes the butt firmly seated so important to controlling a bike?

IIRC that is a ticketable offense in FL due to the new law regarding wheelies & general hooliganism... two tires & butt planted at all times.

I can echo Bill's report on poor-weather performance on the S--mine was an eBay purchase, I bought in Detroit & rode to Tampa. It poured the WHOLE WAY... I was on I-75 for a total of nearly 20 rain-soaked hours, but the S was as tractable as any car on the road.

AZ requires the bike to have a seat, but not that you sit on it. ARS 28-964B

Chewie, if they want to cite me for getting rid of a wedgee, I'm ready to take it to court. Unless you are standing on the seat like Indian Larry.
