Has anyone done this to their snorkle tube?
I was thinking of mounting a video camera in the fairing and this would open up the air intake as well before..... ![]() after....... ![]()

take a look at what SJBMW did to their R12S intake, check their racing site.

Or what about just cutting it off at the filter and leaving enough to retain the filter?? Try it and let us know.

something tells me just cutting that off would be bad, there would be turbulence from the opening in the fairing which probably wouldn't get MORE air into the snorkel, and maybe less. The SJBMW setup appears to be the best effort.

I dunno about that. Opening up restricted airboxes is an old trick. A popular mod on late model Guzzis is to simply remove the airbox top and expose the filter. It eliminates a similar snorkel that seems to be there primarily to quieten the motor down.

The R12S snorkle setup provides for a ram air effect.
Cutting it in half with a large opening under the body or removing it entirely will negate that effect and alter the intake flow of air. If simply removing the snorkle would have yielded a performance boost, I'd have to beleive SJ BMW Racing would have simply removed it. Instead, they chose to retain the length as well as the ram air effect and simply enlarged the end of the tube.

here's another look at the SJBMW piece, i think it looks pretty cool, check out the link and find the Mule.
![]() http://www.sjbmwracing.com/ I will also mention that there is probably little real world benefit to be gained by getting more air into the R12S airbox, UNLESS you have significantly increased fueling, which would require some other mods like porting, HC pistons, and some kind of fuel management system. Chris H was running 14:1 pistons, some serious portwork, and a Motec ignition system in order to need that small improvement in the air intake. A stock bike with that might actually run worse because it would just be leaner. If you have an R11S that is a different story, because for some reason BMW thought that choking the intake of that sportbike was a good idea. Lennies InDuct solves that problem quite nicely.

Thanks for the input. I can visualize turbulence......especially if I put a video camera in the fairing. And, yes, I believe SJ-BMW did some homework to come up with their modification so I'll have to come up with a different approach.
