Missing R1100S

Last week I rode my Black, 2000 R1100S from Merritt Island, FL to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to begin working a 6 month contract here. Knowing Cedar Rapids has winters, I had already purchase an old 96 Outback that I had left here in Cedar Rapids.

I arrived with the bike a week ago Friday, spent about a half an hour at the leasing office, then left it out front of the apartment for another half hour while I unpacked it. After that I put in into my garage. Checked on it again on Sunday and all was well. This morning I went out and checked on it again as I was planning on a little ride today. Opened the garage door and the garage was empty.

Garage was locked, but it would be easy to reach behind the door and release the locks on both sides. Just surprised me as I didn't leave the bike exposed for too long.

It was just shy of rolling 170,000 miles, the seat was in need of replacement, but it still ran like a champ. No problems at all on the 1400 mile journey up here.

It did have a set of freshly rebuilt Ohlins on it. That's the only thing I can think of that anyone would want.

Just an FYI I guess. I have filed a police report and they did send someone out. It was also insured.

Looks like the only picture I have on my laptop in CR is a dump from my cell phone.

I do hate a thief

Watch Craig's list for parts to start showing up. I know you've got to be pissed to the max.

That stinks, hope you catch the bastard. Was anything else stolen from the garage, or just the bike?

The only thing in the garage was the bike. Panniers, tank bag, and bike key were in the apartment.

BMW's are not noted as being stolen for parts, unlike Harley-Davidsons. I'd be guessing a joy ride, and an insider that saw you putting the bike away. Possible it might turn up in a ditch by a cornfield somewhere.

It's a shame.
You sure got your money's worth out of it however.

Well Craig, a joy ride without the keys means for certain that it will be trashed when/if they find it. If you've got theft insurance there are some great deals out there.

I am really sorry to hear about your misfortune. Sometimes people really suck!

When I used to live in an apartment in Jacksonville some fools tried to steal my 1982 GS1000SZ multiple times. I had a kill switch hidden that stopped them the first time.

Second time I had a Kryptonite lock and braided cable looped through a 4' trailer anchor screwed into the ground next to the asphalt parking lot.

Finally, after I noticed someone had been working on the K-lock, I started keeping the bike on a drop cloth in my living room.

We moved to Denver in '73 with a 62 Chevy Impala. First night at the apartment the car got stolen. They found it a half mile away out of gas. That saved it that time.

I rigged up a ground to the coil through a toggle switch that was hidden under the dash. With the switch closed the car would turn over forever, but would never start. That saved it the next time. Got rid of the car soon after that. It wouldn't fit in the apartment.

There's a guy named Gator near Orlando that deals in "used BMW" parts. You can find though the Airhead club or The Poverty Riders. If its parted out he'll know about it sooner or later.

Problem resolved. The bike is back in my apartment garage.

Turns out there was a communications timing problem between the sales staff and the maintenance staff of this apartment complex. The maintenance folks had a work order to clean out the garage. When they discovered the bike, they moved it two garages down thinking it was the previous occupants property, who was deliquent on his rent, and they were holding the bike hostage until he cleared his debt. Not sure if that is even legal.

I kind of got used to it being gone and was looking forward to going bike shopping again.

That is funny.
I think that is the highest mileage R1100S I have heard of?

To funny. We'll give you the craziest story award and try to find you a new seat. After 175,00 miles the one you have has to be packed down hard.

No reason to stop shopping-you've gotten your money's worth with that one and two bikes are better than one!

John,

that makes me sick to my stomach. All I can say is I'm really sorry friend. I didn't even know they made one in black. Beautiful bike. And 170 thou miles? Sorry.

Okay, now I've read through the rest of the posts and see you've been reunited. Whew! So, what are you going to get now!

Think of it as a good excuse to get yourself a new shiny machine. But people do suck!

And if it was just a little further away, it could have been a popular band 3 Doors down
