Regi$tration and In$urance fee$ make it $o expen$ive to own two bike$
For a while now I have been looking forward to getting another bike to compliment my road based R12S, something that gets me into the bush. Patiently I have been waiting until I can afford the second bike. I just came to the realisation that I can't afford it. I don't mean the cost of the other bike but moreso the Registration and Insurance costs.
It costs just under $500 a year to have my 12S registered and another $500 a year to Insure. So I get another bike and lets double that. $2k just to have the bikes sitting there. That's $40 bucks a week before I roll a wheel out the driveway. I have heard that some countries have a single registration fee for multiple bikes or is it Insurance? You'd think the Government might do more to keep people on bikes. But for the same fee as a car it's not very attractive I spose. Even if I was loaded I think I would struggle to comes to terms with shelling out $1k year for each bike just to have registered and insured. Looks like I might have to just have a bike that does it all and be content with a GS or some such or not have one of them Insured. Friggin 2k a year for two bikes - it's just bloody rude

For example overhere :
to get a bike (or car) registered it will set you back 9 Euros. Only 9 Euros (not every year ; just one time !) road tax is 76 Euros a year (per bike) ; road tax for a car is based on its (dry)weight, and if it is a petrol or diesel car (for example ; my E36 320i costs me 51 Euros a month on road tax only...) I don't have to pay road tax for the old CB900F, cause that bike is older than 25 years. But ; for my old Mini (registered in 1988) I stil have to pay 11 Euros a month for this stupid road tax. Insurance : 24 Euros each month for the Golf Cabriolet 10 Euros each month for the Mini 28 Euros each month for the BMW E36 17 Euros each month for the 1200S 19 Euros each month for the 1200RT 5 Euros each month for the CB900 makes : 103 Euro each month = 1236 Euros each year Registration : 6 vehicles x 9 Euros = 54 Euros Road Tax : BMW E36 : 12x 51 = 612 Euros each year BMW 1200S : 76 Euros each year BMW 1200RT : 76 Euros each year Honda : free Mini : 12x 11 = 132 Euros each year Golf : 12x 36 = 432 Euros each year in total : 1328 Euros each year That said ; that's more than 200 Euros each month... ![]() For only having the stuff...

Yikes, I couldnt have from 8-15 bikes tat that rate.
These days, four of mine are track only, so there are no fees at all. One is an antique, so it's $75 for 5 years. $45/yr for minimum insurance. so $50 a year. Two others I just carry minimum insurance (90 for both) and registration (100 for both) so, each of those 2 cost me $100 year. My S is still full coverage and I think runs about $300/yr with both registration and insurance. So, about $500/year total insurance and registration for, depending on how you count it, 4 or 8 bikes. It adds up, but is tolerable. The costs did cause me to make both of my bikes (SStk and SBk SVs) that could be street/track, into pure track bikes. Certainly helps.

All the insurance companies over here have been sneaking their rates up to cover their losses. However, I think mine are like this:
2000 Harley-Davidson $225 year, full coverage 100/300 2003 BMW F650 Dakar $225 year, full coverage 100/300 2007 BMW r1200s (Dairyland) $500 year, 50/100 Plus individual registrations of about $90 each. But I can't get this unless I have my cars insured with Farmers. So that sneaks more in. My best insurance is my Porsche 928, it's only $111 per year.

You gotta pay to play. State Farm has individual policies for each bike. At least they don't all come due at once.

insurance, 300 for the SE, 400 for the GS, 150 for the XC.
i wouldnt have bought the third bike, but arizona started waiving the veh registration tax for bikes that you declare are "primarily used off road". which saved me 300 bucks on the SE and XC.

Chewie, it's only the MRA, motorcycle riders association that's keeping the Government at bay still allowing motorbikes to be on the road. So the Government is coming in the back door saying we'll TAX the bastards off the road, that's why it is expensive and will rise. Same went for hard wired front lights!
It doesn't stop there depending where you live. In SA we have a Save the river Murray Levey on everything you own, calculated on the Auditer Generals evaluation on your property, and then there's the Emergency Services Levy on all registrations. The Council has just now issued a catchment Levy in addition to your rates. The Bloody country is so top heavy that most tax is swallowed up in top echelon. Example in my council. Some P*ick was on $237,000 a year and left for another council for more money. What could he possibly do in a Council to earn that sort of pay level. The same in Government . That's why our Tax/reg/rates are so high. And that's why there's no funding for better health/hospitals and infer-structure. Here's a break down of my Regisration: Reg Charge for 12 Months $33.00 Tax = Admin fee $ 6.00 Tax = State Tax Emerg Services Levy $24.00 Tax = State Stamp Duty $60.00 Tax = CTP Ins Prem $305.73 GST on CTP Ins $27.27 Tax = Federal Tax Total $456.00 Last edited by Kieran R1100S; 08-16-2009 at 04:30 PM.. |

$500/yr on the R1100S and the same on the R1150RT; however, I've been doing the monthly payment plan since 1978 and have all both bikes, my truck and Debbie's S2000 insured with State Farm so it's just a monthly bill of, gasp, about $220. 100/300 with the same for uninsured and deductibles of 500 Comp & 1000 Collision on each vehicle. Me thinks it's being in the Atlanta metro area.... |

In NSW we pay a registration fee, which for me last year was just under $100 and Compulsory Third Party Personal Injury Insurance (called a Green Slip). As well as these there is Accident/theft etc insurance for the bike (was $520 last year).
Just got my Compulsory Third Party Personal Injury Insurance renewal for this year. The breakdown is.... Premium $343.66 GST $34.37 MCIS Levies $153.27 Total $531.30 So assuming the registration fee and accident insurance remains the same as last year (ha ha), all up round figure of about $1150. This is for a 2001 R1100S and 58 y/o pillar of society rider with a clean licence and no claims. There seems to be a growing trend by the government to use the word "levi" to raise extra funds. It sounds a lot friendlier than "tax".
