Is this forum getting meaner?

I don't post too often here but I lurk pretty much everyday. This forum has given me some very valuable tech advise, cool trip reports and provided some much needed comic relief in an otherwise nasty (at times) world. But recently it seems as though things are getting more and more nasty here? Maybe I'm just getting more sensitive too it as I've seen some pretty ignorant stuff lately but it just seems that the male anatomy measuring contests are getting nastier and more frequent? Anyway, interested to see if anyone else has noticed the same. Hope everyone has a nice holiday.....

Take heart Mark. Lawgivers have anticipated observations like yours and and have provided for just such situations. Pretty soon it will be the law of the land including internet boards. Hang on !

It only takes one or two of the right type of person to change the tone of a thread. Mundis is right too, winter is here.

Every now and then, whether it's this forum, any of the K-bikes forums, adventure forums, Nikon forums, this threadstarter rears its head. I sometimes am, like yourself, annoyed if a thread goes OT when in fact you're trying to get info, whatever. Well, I have to remind myself that you gets the good with the bad with the ugly. I poke myself now and then that most of us are newcomers, many on these sites know each other personally, and frankly, at times it's just plain boring talking about oil, tire pressure, and the likes of . . . show us your new bike. I know of a forum, not motorcycle, that is so polite as maintained by the moderators, etc. that even a cross word the reply may get censored and/or a member can and will be put in timeout.

I'm one of the newcomers and frankly, have been tolerated if not somewhat accepted. My words of advice, you take what you can get out of these forums and accept what you cannot.

...give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things that should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.

Merry Christmas!

Mark -

Thanks for raising the topic. A board for the S is too important to all of us to let it be pushed into the mud by a few bad apples (to mix metaphors).

In the last few days, one person has threatened to beat me up twice in different threads (one thread got locked).

He also "outed" my family name in one of those threat posts (and a number of times before) and that's a very serious breach of internet ethics especially at PP where most riders choose to hide their identities for whatever good and bad reasons. But I can live with that just like I can live with a surprise pile of stinking dog poop on our property from time to time.

Frankly, as a very long time BMW owner, I think things are more wonky and less decent on PP than elsewhere in the BMW world. For sure you see a lot of hyena or wolf-pack mentality at PP, the exact opposite of the kind of courage and independence some of the little racers here think they see when they look in the mirror.

There are reasons the R1100S (and successor models) seem to have drawn a different demographic here, although there are still mostly good people here. Perhaps a thread for another day. Sad to see people with an anger management problem posting - that can have serious consequences for their mental and physical health as well as the character of this board.

While I am no shrinking violet when it comes to controversy and have been a member or Chairman of enough boards-of-directors to have scars for it, very sad to see people who can't handle differences without stomping their feet and snorting from both ends.

But let me ask you a question, Mark. You've been bothered by stuff posted. Maybe you are talking about something I posted. How come you haven't chosen to speak up before when you've seen bad behavior? Are you a little racer or do you really have some courage and independence?

Is the forum getting meaner? good question. I joined here 2 1/2 years ago and my very first post which was a question on what exhaust to buy for my BCR was given a scathing "DO A SEARCH!" response right out of the gate. that kind of set the tone for me on what to expect. the way i see it the big difference between this forum and just some library of information is the human element. that is what makes it get hot in here sometimes, and also what keeps us coming back for more. i got plenty of links on info sites, which i use infrequently, but I am compelled to come here everyday, to see how we are all doing, and I guess I am not alone.

Happy Holidays to all, and I very much look forward to the Xmas present thread! Peace!

Ben, do not go there, quit with your revisionist history please...

Most members DO NOT choose to hide their name here. They know each other, they have met each other. That is one thing that makes it different here. And that's a primary reason the board has endured. You want to hide behind an alias, most here will dismiss you sooner or later for lack of credibility, credentials, knowlege, whatever. The ones that do, or did had reasons that were not always that virtuous. They used the board as opportunity to attack or pound on people.

Quit trying to rewrite history or how this board has and always will operate Ben. I, and others will not let you do it.

Pick someone of substance and we can tell you who they are, where they live, what they do.

The others are nothing more than "hit and run" posters.
