dB killers help in two ways: they lower the overall roar a bit and they reduce the tinny quality to the sound - that makes the exhaust note a lot better baritone. Not sure if they cut the power or even enough to notice.

But they only work if you have good packing in your straight-through mufflers, not steel wool, loose baffles, or fluffy Yoshimura fiberglass. Those things have almost no value for controlling sound.
