As far as I'm concerned, there is only one pre-order that matters. Mine!!

Do I need an RR? Probably not. Do I have the skills to ride one? Absolutely not. But I figure if I can get an incredibly capable track bike that is a bit lighter than my R1200S, with only 150 HP in Rain Mode (I'm pretty sure I'm good enough to ride a 150 HP bike), ABS with a track focus, DTC to keep the shiny side up for a competitive price, why not. If I change my mind in Feb, I could probably sell it at a profit before it even left the dealership.

And it's true that Doc Curve can be a bit of a fanboy, but not forget that Corser did finish 5th in a race and ran times that would have won races last year. He led for a few laps at least once. If BMW can figure out the electrickery and how to keep tires on the bike, I think they have a real shot to fight for podiums next year. No it's not as good in WSB as the Aprilia, but I think they held their own. At very least they got the BMW name associated with a race bike.

Success of the RR will depend on BMW stepping up the pace of their development. This is not a bike that can go for 5 or 6 years between a major update like the GS can. In 2 or three years the 2010 bikes will seem slow and stale. BMW must shorten development cycles on this bike to stay competitive and continue to sell.

I have a few concerns about the RR. Price of tires and if it has soul. The K1200S was a great bike, but lacked the soul that the R bikes and my little F has. If the RR lacks soul, it may not last in my garage very long. I'll be out shopping for a used Buell.

Good comments. I'm even slightly tempted. I've just seen too many guys end up slower on literbikes than on their light-weights. I'm afraid to become one of them.

Speaking of which... N8, any thoughts on the "soul" of the RR vs the R1100S or R1200S?

My real dream for a track bike is to build one out of a dirt bike. I'm thinking a YZF450. Change the suspension, gearing, wheels and a little body work. You've got a sub 300 lb bike with what, 50 or 60 hp? One of these days...

Thanks for the contributions N8. I for one enjoying the images and text that was on topic.

Frayed nerves, saddened egos, lost dreams, unfulfilled desires.........who knows what drives the BMW negative thinkers that roost upon eggs of wish-I-were-ism? BMW has trounced the Jap design that was copied from the Italian MV of long ago. BMW steps to the front once again. For all who want the best quality, best resale, strongest performance, and a life in the get-there-first-lane.............sign up and get yours ordered. To hold back is to stay back. Bravo BMW and its new flagship, ultra high rev, cutting edge machine. Let the fleas stay on the slower dogs while the German Grey Hounds slip on ahead toward our sports leading edge. May the Nay-sayer's tears salt their grits and seal their ego wounds.

This is funny... in a very sad way, actually...

The sociopath is the one who knows that everyone else is wrong...

All you are stating is that - in fact - BMW is the last in line of the copiers of the great MV then?

No Ralf.........they (MV) never made one like this. I enjoyed my MV and it was very fast and fun. BMW has leap frogged the competition including MV, with this bike. For all of us who poured over the initial details and waited for the final product, the steak is on the plate. Sushi it is not. Nothing sad about any of this, only joy and good things for all who have been patient. Perhaps you will get a used one in time, although the GS is a equally fine machine..........in its niche. Some lead........others just stay in the crowd. The choice is yours. Bravo this new BMW 1000RR and the young racers like Nate who seek to tame its focus toward a winning season. Sorry for the frown mouths, but the writing is on the wall for this coming season if BMW continues their development and stick-to-it-ness that this past season started. I really like the new Aprilla as well, and it would be my second choice behind the RR. The Jap bikes are just too pedestrian for me however. Why eat a Big Mac when KC Prime is available?

Too funny. I checked back onto this board for the first time in weeks and saw a great initial post. Now that I'm at the end, I remember why I rarely come here anymore.

This is a BMW forum where, guess what, "fanboys" of BMWs reside. If you want unfiltered truth and objectivity, go listen to the global warming scientists.

That is the difference between boxer engined BMW's and the rest. We love our R's not because they are the fastest. We love them because they have got soul (or character) - Flat twin motor, telelever and paralever suspension, weird turn indicator controls, etc. None of the liter bikes will ever have soul. The RR will be a fantastic machine. Will you keep it for a couple of years and still get goosebumps every time you get on it. I don't think so. Would I like to ride the RR? Absolutely. Will I buy one? Don't think so.

Thanks for the invite Dean. My wife and I plan to travel a lot in the coming years and I would love very much a chance to meet you again, ride, and talk about the way it was and the new things that continue to build our collective two wheel sport. I have been to Show Low and the whole area there is beautiful and great for open road riding. I think we met in 1978 when I was out to San Jose on a tricked out R100S. Chris had just started working and the program you helped found had begun. I was taken back into the shop to see some of the early twins that San Jose had started to modify.

We are almost the same age...........you being only slightly older. Why do we still ride like we do? Is there any way to give it up gracefully? No? I didn't think so. Thanks for the positive comments on this wonderful new BMW RR. It will not replace our love and allegiance for the twin...........but it will surely add new chapters in the performance books.

Thanks Bubba for the link. The section where they say they will destroy 300 of the bikes that was used for testing tells me BMW has learned they need to get their bikes sorted out BEFORE the general public does it for them.
I think they realize this bike is for non-BMW riders so they couldn't afford to have the usual "they all do that" BMW's are known for.
I know I've said I'll never buy another first year BMW, especially a first model BMW, but this one is working on me. That Red White and Blue model is calling me.....

A little OT, but I'm still hoping they'll come out with a smaller triple, ala the 675.
I think I'd probably have to jump on that bandwagon. Especially if the pricing stayed as competitive as the 1000 seems to be.

Agreed Roger. BMW has done the research already for a strong triple and that displacement needs to be explored vigorously. I will NEVER forget my years on the Laverda 1200 triple and became convinced that if I ever got a clean shot at a high performance BMW triple........I would take it. Especially if, like you suggest, it is priced as reasonable as the new RR is.

625 cc, radial valves, staggered injectors, titanium valves, slipper pistons, ect.
