i used to have one of these as well, a Heritage Golden Eagle Archtop, boy do I wish I had kept that thing!

Some very nice instruments among the group. You are all fortunate to have such treasures.

Here's one. It is a Benedetto seven string personally made by Bob some years ago and used as his personal instrument for a while. It is in the lesser seen oval hole configuration as opposed to the F hole designs and is one of the very few ever made like it by Bob. The low string on a jazz seven string is usually tuned to an A. Some will tune it to a B, but that tuning is found more often amongst the rock players with solid body seven strings.

Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, not too far from here, is a stronghold of both teaching and playing of the seven string in the tradition of the great New Jersey guitarists Bucky and John Pizzarelli.

nice guitar Geo, I had an instructor who was personal friends with Benedetto from a way back, he had a very early Benedetto that predated the carbon truss rods. It eventually got a twisted neck and had to be sent back for some work. it sounded very nice!

I can't wait till someone starts a thread listing bank account balances and stock portfolios. Cool!

Yeah, this isn't really supposed to be taken as bragging but as a showcase for beautiful or perhaps rare art in the form of musical instruments. It also says somthing about each pelican's personality. We've discovered though sidetracked threads that many of us share interests outside of our R11/12s'. Isn't is awesome that a particular model of motorcycle is so unique that it attracts people with similar lifestyles and interests?

My account has less than $1000 in it at any given time. The guitars, bikes and motorcycles are as close as I get to "savings".

Good Idea BB/ The Benny belongs to my son. He bought it some years ago as a student at SIUE and paid it off month by month at the bank. My instruments are mainly mules and fun pieces. No 58 Bursts for me ! I do have a 61 Les Paul SG with that goofy pull type whammy bar, but its a restored, broken off/repaired neck, rewired and refinished labor of love rather than one of those 10K guitars that it would be if original.

I took some lessons years ago as a kid (very few). What would be a good acoustic to pick up used? I'm looking to start again.

I'm also reminded of what terrible things we did to great guitars back when we were for the most part idiots. We used to take 60's Strats and torture them by sandblasting them until they looked like driftwood or we would cut a bunch of holes in them with a hole saw to lighten them up. Kind of like a Buddy Guy look with holes. Old Gibsons were just that...old Gibsons and we would mix and match parts and destroy finishes with abandon. Only later did we find out that people would actually pay good money for a 3 bolt Strat. Oh well, it seemed like fun at the time ! We had the spirit of Les Paul and his experiments but not the brains.

You gotta be careful though. I inspected a 60's Fender Jaguar the other day that belonged to a guy that had paid $ 800 for it. It looked good, but kinda odd. Problem was that it was a knock off probably made by a small Japanese shop some years ago. It had 4 bolts holding the neck on UNDERNEATH the plate on the back of the guitar. It also had a collection of incorrect parts on it but now the owner knows its worth maybe a couple hundred bucks as a curio rather than as a fine instrument. I wouldn't be amazed to learn that the Japanese buyers bought it and took it back home as they buy the strangest things on their shopping trips as well as fine instruments.

hell no, go for a Martin, find a scratched up D model on eBay and just play!.

We have a Gibson Blue Ridge, an Alvaez Mod 5065, a Yamaha Bass and a Technics electric piano.

Jane gave me the bass for Christmas. Will start lessons soon.

A very playable, decently made and good sounding entry level guitar has been the Taylor Big Baby. My first real Martin was a D-1 at nearly twice the price. You might spend more getting one of the 70's Martins back into playing condition than it's worth. I always hated Takamine but Stephen Stills plays a few. Yamaha was hit and miss.

Just make sure that it's a "solid top" meaning the top is not a laminate and you should find a pretty nice starter guitar.

Remember, generally cheap guitars do not play as easily as good guitars and as a beginner you will grow frustrated with sore fingers, buzzing strings and sour notes and be more likely to give up.

Members of my family have purchased a couple of Taks lately at a really good price and they are quite good for the money. I like the older Yamahas. Martins are also hit and miss as they may be hard to play unless worked over, but they make them out of good stuff. The Big Baby may be more than the budget allows.

My personal acoustic is a 66 J-45. I've bought it twice realizing that I made a big mistake to sell it.

I am still speaking to my dealer friend Dave even after he flooded the area with Hannah Montana and Tinkerbell guitars over the Christmas holidays. After all, those Gene Autry and Roy Rogers guitars from way back aren't really any different and it seems like everybody knows somebody who has or had one.

Its a personal thing. Take some time and something will turn up that has your name on it. Try to get them to throw in a six foot standup cardboard Kiss display with it.
