Anyone on here know John H-asty? Also have a question on R50
I am hopefully in the process of buying one of John H prized possessions, a R50 1965 in the next month or two. A collector friend of mine bought from John a few years ago with one condition, to be given the option to buy back....which I don`t think will happen, as John has moved on the vintage auto racing...still active at 75. Some of you might know him from many years of involvement in racing motorcycles and a lover of all things motorcycles. He is a successful lawyer in Charlotte and was a trustee for the AMA for a number of years.
The question I have is why do some of the R50 and R60 have different valve covers. Some with more pronounced cooling fins and some not? Just trying to get that straight. The bike is show room quality and has been gone through and has a box of documentation. Be safe, Lane

Per Wikipedia (if one can believe most of what we see there):
A common valve cover from 1952–1969 on models R50, R60, R50/2, R60/2, R51/3, R67, R67/2, R67/3 had six fins. The R50S, R68, R69, and R69S of this period had two-fin valve covers. They are, I think, interchangeable and I've seen all sorts of mixes - my R60/2 that was brought up to R69S spec (as confirmed by Nathan Mende at Boxer Works) has 2 fins (I think - need to look in the garage later). Yeah, it is a slow day at the clinic. Bill

Part of my job is at Dialysis Clinics - not much craziness there, unfortunately.
Don't get out much, but tell me about Euro Night.

Max speed shop is a, for lack of better words, a yuppy biker bar. They have a euro night on, I think every second tuesday...I believe. Its on south blvd. near clanton rd. Its a cool place....outdoor band...normally a good group of bikes, all brands....seems like most people leave the atitudes at home. I have never been there on euro night but plan to this spring.

Looked at Mac's Speed Shop web site - photo gallery.
Looks like a Bud-Lite crowd --- ![]() ![]() for lack of a better term. ![]() The guys at Touring Sport in G'ville have told me of a Ride-what-ya-got Euro-centric type get together at one of their local watering holes. Haven't been, yet either. Very wary of evening imbibing and riding - will occasionally have a beer w/ lunch when out riding if we can sit and metabolize it off after.

Lane.............The most prized, or at least one of the top ten top most desired R50S bikes in the entire world is for sale right now. It is ready to race, comes with spares, recent dyno readings, and fully ready to compete and lead in it's class. If I was your age.........I would buy it. It is a 1961 R50S that is "as new" with full race mods including a "long rod" modification that I have never heard of being done on a /2 engine although I did one to a /7 engine in 1987. It produces 42.73 horse power at the rear wheel at 8050 RPMs. Easily the nicest BMW race bike I have ever seen for sale on E-Bay. Although there have only been 34 bids on it and the price is barely up over 10,000................I would suggest that this bike may set a record for the highest price paid so for on E-Bay for a vintage BMW race bike. What do you think after seeing the pictures? I would pay just over 20,000 for it at once.........as would many others. What about you Lane........could you swing the funds and bring this bike to a home in the South? Thoughts?

Hi Curve.....nice bike for sure and thanks for the tip. I have commited to the seller which is also a riding buddy.....and its a wine and cheese kind of bike which is what I`m looking for. That race bike is interesting though, looks like its in Germany. I will keep you posted.
wrbix- Bill and Rob, yea, its a budlight kind of place, although they have a great selection of euro beers. Rob....that`s funny.....when I go, I`ll make sure and not bathe after my morning gym workout. Be safe, Lane
