Question question: cylinder head/rocker cover - temperature

dear all,
i've bought a pair of carbon covers from wunderlich to cover the lower halves of the rocker covers on my S.
the catalogue suggests mounting them using "standard heat-resistant silicon".
in my local hardware store there are 2 different silicon products. the first is resistant up to 150°C and the second (for fireplace, fireproof bricks etc.) is rated to 1500°C.
can somebody kindly tell me what temperature the rocker covers run at, under "normal" i.e. standard setup, no chips, standard exhaust, etc., use.
many thanks

Measured with a sparkplug thermocouple, CHTs generally run in the 300-400 deg F range. The rocker boxes will be cooler, I would think by at least 100-deg F or so, so your 150-deg stuff will probably be Ok. If it melts, use the other.

Just to clarify:

300-400 deg F equals to 148,9 - 204,4 °C, 100-deg F equals to 37,8 °C (give or take a few decimals...)

The rocker cover temperature will definitely be much higher than 100 deg F (normal body temp is about 36,7 °C / 98 deg F). The cover temp is propably more like 100°C.

Actually I'd be VERY surprised if the covers run as hot as 100 C thats boiling water temp, or 212 F. our oil generally is best kept around 210-220 F so if thats the oil temp its a good bet the cover is MUCH cooler than that. You can usually put your hand on them.

In any case 150 C silicone should be plenty adequate.

Rapt,

you must be right about the boiling temp, it can't be that high really. Don't know if it's me or what but no way I can hold my hand on the head after the motor is run warm. How about we say it's around 70-80°C ...?

Deal. 70-80 C feels pretty darn hot.

Thanks for the useful information. I'll give a try with the 150°C stuff and see what happens.
Cheers

Hi,

Can't quantify it exactly, but I'm very sure the cylinder head will be above 100C and the rocker cover below 100c. (a quick spit on each when trying to diagnose which cylinder isn't running will prove that to you) I think your 80C estimate is pretty accurate. At any rate, since we know it to be under 100C, the 150C stuff should be fine.
