advice please

Hi, I think my R1200S need abit of TLC but i need some help.

1, Can you tell me what is the best way of removing paint and respraying the engine.

2. The bolts on the brakes look a but rusty. How do I clear up or replace?

3. The breaks look gray (not black) how do I get them back to black?

Cheers

Davie

1. the engine is usually powder coated and you can really only strip that cleanly when doing it chemically (which would require dissembling the engine). However, if you just want to spray paint, sandblasting might give you enough of a roughing to do that.

2. Dremel tool with a steel brush wheel does miracles there... after that, paint them with either clear coat or any kind of color.

3. The brakes? You mean the calipers? Wouldn't really mess with them much... try spraying them with WD40 (seriously). But not so much that you flood the pads or rotors... done right, it works miracles. Done wrong, you'll need new pads! Cover the slots and then just gently spray them or - better yet - do it with a paintbrush.

Really bad advice Ralf. At least points 1 and 2. Drop all conversation about WD40 and brakes anything. Never sandblast a engine or glass bead either a intact engine you intend to keep using.

I am glad they work for you, but neither is a good idea. Remember as well that BMW bolts have a thin layer of anticorrosive plate on each bolt.........do no wire brush unless you see real rust......otherwise the protective plating that may just be stained "rusty looking" will be brushed off as well. Like you however, I wire off lug nuts, fork bolts, axles, and the like once the plating wears off and they want to rust, so point 2 is not all bad.

Your idea of the WD going on to the calipers with a brush is a good one however, and a continuing index, as it would almost promise that "40 fluid" would be scattered to the puck and disc areas. WD, if you must use it, may be wiped on to a surface.......but on to brake areas? No thanks. IMO.

This thread is worthless (or, at least, the advice given is likely worthless) without pics!

I mean, honestly. How can anyone give advice about what looks or doesn't look "normal" on the bike without pictures? Never mind the issues of color correction and all that, but bad pictures are better than no pictures at all in this situation, IMHO.

Has this bike been ridden on the beach or something? Why would the engine need to be resprayed and everything be starting to rust out?

Hi Guys.

I like in Scotland and ride in all weathers. It maybe easier to replace the bolts with new ones. Does anyone know of a local supplier and or parts catalog?

Cheers

I'll second that - I'm looking to replace a lot o' rusty bits that annoy the hell out of me - right now I'm assuming that I'll have to use my local dealer; good news, they're less than 1/2 mile, bad news this is Germany and BMW prices are even higher here...

GB, have you seen these websites?
www.boxertrix.com :: Index
::. UKGSer.com .:: - Powered by vBulletin

there are threads about S/S fastener kits and where to get them. Being UK based there will be someone that has the same problems.

in my part of the world, we just have trouble with dust...
